Joshua Prince’s I Saw An Ant on the Railroad Track made me chuckle. My two-year-old granddaughter now walks around singing “tickety-tack.” It’s a hit in our house.
Prince weaves a rhyme around an ant heading the wrong way on a railroad track and switchman Jack, who tries to avert disaster and save an ant. Thankfully, his story is as delicious to us as Jack’s lunch is to that wrong-way ant!
Jack sees the calamity unfolding before his eyes, puts down his lunch, and jumps into action. But, the switch is stuck—can he reroute the train before it’s too late? You’ll feel the train bearing down, trust me.
Macky Pamintuan’s illustrations are humorous and give the ant and Jack personalities that everyone’s going to love. The ant is happy and yet determined. Jack is brawny, with heart. They’re irresistible, and I don’t mean to be trite—irresistible really is the best word.
Beneath the humor and rhythmic flow is something more important—Jack’s huge heart and willingness to single-handedly reroute 10 tons of moving freight train to save even the smallest of creatures. In my book, that’s a story worth hearing.
