Author: Eli Gottlieb

Publisher: William Morrow (an imprint of HarperCollins)

ISBN: 978-0-06-128464-9

Eli Gottlieb is the author of The Boy Who Went Away that won the Rome Prize and also the 1998 McKitterick Prize from the British Society of Authors. It received extraordinary notices and was a New York Times Notable book.  Gottlieb currently lives in Boulder, Colorado.

The first chapter of this fine literary fiction begins by explaining how close were Rob Castor - a famous writer- and best-friend Nick Framingham.

Rob committed suicide after shooting and murdering girlfriend Kate Pierce and now his passing has left a huge gap in Nick’s life. Nick feels he will never be the same person again and distances himself from everyone. What is more, his marriage to Lucy is falling apart, leaving his future uncertain.

Lucy couldn’t care less about Nick’s grief over his friend. She never liked Rob and as far as she is concerned she always felt there was something strange about him.

Nick is restless and when Rob’s grieving sister, ex-rock and roll singer Belinda, arrives in Monarch, Nick has only her to turn to.  He feels they are able to connect on a certain level despite her confrontational nature.

Nick’s attraction grows by the day for Belinda and he cannot help but be seduced by this incredibly sexual woman.

Later in this book we are taken back to the time when Nick and Rob were young boys. Their life then was pretty innocent; they were always surrounded by love and affection. Now however, Nick questions, what’s changed?

This book was quite interesting with a few twists and turns along the way. Gottlieb has a keen eye for detail and the way in which he writes also has a poetic flair. The story is ever intriguing with likable characters and a plot to keep the reader hooked.

I sympathized with the main character many times for the way in which he grieved. Yet there were times where I thought “this is getting a little out of hand.”

It just seemed a little boring to me in some parts, more or less repeating the same thing. The ending however was unexpected and totally moving.

This is not just the average story, this has much more depth to it than you can imagine. Sometimes it has you laughing or you are torn between crying and wonder at the author’s unique ability to construct such beautiful sentences.

If you like murders or thrillers or just something with a bit more to it than the usual type, this is certainly a book I can recommend. A thrilling, gripping, clever well written story.
