There are a couple of things which set "Cover to Cover" apart from other bookmaking titles. One is that the finished products in "Cover to Cover" are intrinsically works of art as opposed to books created for secondary purposes, such as the majority of those found in books like Marie Browning’s "Handcrafted Journals, Albums, Scrapbooks & More."
The creations found in books such as Alisa Golden’s "Creating Handmade Books" are nearly – but not quite – on the same artistic level as those found in "Cover to Cover" but the main difference between these two books is clarity of instruction. While Golden’s book has quite a few illuminating diagrams, the instruction/diagram ratio is even more visually elucidative in LaPlantz’s book – most of the pages in "Cover to Cover" are evenly divided into two sections, one for instruction and one for her crystal clear accompanying diagrams. This makes LaPlantz's book superior to Golden’s, especially for readers who have difficulty visualizing directions without diagrams.
Following an exhaustive and completely understandable introduction to the craft of bookmaking, the subsequent chapters of "Cover to Cover," entitled "Pamphlet Stitch," "Basic Codex" (i.e., a book that looks like a book), "Stitches," "Stab Bindings," "Fold Books," "Combination Books" and "Unusual Bindings," provide a plethora of clearly explained artistic creations for the bookmaking artist. The last chapter, "Presentation Counts," presents the most wildly artistic books imaginable but includes no accompanying instruction.
The inspiringly beautiful color photographs, the abundant black & white diagrams, plus LaPlantz’s clear text, will assure that even the bookmaking novice will be able to create similar works of art.
