Author:  Florence Chatzigianis

ISBN: 978-0-9792796-2-1

With 32-colored maps and 50-plus color photos, one may never have to leave home to enjoy the 26 gorgeous and breathtaking hikes Chatzigianis so eloquently describes. If I were considering a hike, I would first consult the book for its great points and information – like why to take a hike on vacation, what to bring and tips on being a responsible hiker.

I have always thought of France as being littered with outdoor cafes and tourists. It always appears to be bustling with activity in the movies. Until Chatzingianis shared the beauty and tranquility of the country, I would never have considered France on my top-ten places of interest.

We start off with the mountains. Are there mountains in France? Yes, of course and they are magnificent! Pic de l’Ours (Bear Peak) reminds me of the hills of Oklahoma. Surrounded by trees, a craggy top shoots up towards the heavens – we would be but a speck in the eye of the lens. On the southeastern side of the Pic de l’Ours, the dark blue sea rolls into a misshaped coastline…absolutely postcard material.

Next, a lesson on “cork.” I wasn’t aware that cork came from a tree! I suppose I never really gave a second thought about the corks in bottles, but after this chapter, I will forever think about the Cork Oak Tree when opening a bottle of wine. Did you know that the first harvest is called “male” cork, but not used for bottle stoppers? It’s the second harvest, the “female” cork that is what we see in wine bottles. It’s fascinating.

And the giant grass – where we get reeds for musical instruments -- is captured with photographs and explained so that even a novice can understand the process. Gosh, the things you can learn on a hike!

A chestnut festival, beautiful scenery, rolling waves, and points of interest clearly marked – you can’t go wrong with this guidebook.

The author is a “freelance travel writer and avid hiker.” She obviously knows the area and definitely knows what most would be interested in when considering a hike.
