Horrors of war are all around us – the mangled bodies of returning soldiers, families torn apart because the war has made the soldier a stranger, and flag-draped coffins arriving on airplanes for burial. Some see going to war as a mark of manhood, the boy becomes a man when he picks up a set of orders to kill on foreign soil. It’s a right of passage for some, but for all, it’s something they will never forget – even in their sleep.

These soldiers and veterans have seen things we can only imagine in our nightmares. With “I Can Still Hear Their Cries,” there is little room left for imagination – only tears and sorrow. These young men were ordering air support and watching children die as we were enjoying our snacks while watched the nightly news. These soldiers learned about death, survival, and what others said they were doing – serving their country. We have all but forgotten the Vietnam conflict – these soldiers relive it in their minds everyday.
These soldiers, like the soldiers today, suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), guilt, anger, and the nightmares of war. In this collection of poignant poems, the reader grasps the depth of what these returning soldiers have seen, heard, felt, and lost.
This work would be a benefit should it be made available to the youth in our country – perhaps they would be better prepared to make that boy-to-manhood step.
