Shep is a lovely tale to be enjoyed by all dog lovers. Border Collie Shep is out one day with his master Martin Wiebe when one of Martin’s cows is killed by a Grizzly Bear. Martin is furious that his dog did not do a thing to stop the attack. Bitter and mad with rage, he yells abuse at the poor sheepdog “you’re not half the dog your mother was! She wouldn’t have let the bear have its way with this cow. You’re not going to work out here.” And with that Martin boots Shep in the rear with his hefty cowboy boot. Puzzled and confused, Shep flees with his tail between his legs. He doesn’t understand what he is supposed to have done wrong, why is his master so angry with him?
Shep keeps on running away, far away from his home as he once knew it. He cannot go back there, he isn’t wanted anymore. Nobody wants him…
John Williams is homeless and robbed of all his possessions. Now all John has left to keep warm at night is the clothes he is wearing. He feels lonely, abandoned and even his own father does not show him hospitality. Sitting alone by a fire and staring into the flames, he feels guilty for the murders he and his old friends Tim and Larry had been involved in. Is this life perhaps God’s way of punishment he wonders. Can God forgive me?
Then from out of the night comes a dog. Timidly it tries to get John’s attention by crawling towards him on it’s belly. John filled with emotion wants nothing to do with it. “Go on and get outta here!” he yells at the hound.
The dog doesn’t understand, why are people being this way with me? I haven’t done anything wrong. Cocking its head to the side, the dog takes a moment to wonder then lifts his head and lets out a miserable howl. From that moment on John finds himself warming to the dog. Things gradually become better for John, he meets new people and finally is able to find a house and keep warm during those cold nights. His friendship with Shep grows and grows, until the two of them are inseparable. He teaches Shep how to round up sheep and shares good times with his dog. They are like best friends.
Suddenly something happens to get in the way of that friendship and Shep is once again lonely and this time, heart-broken.
A truly wonderful tale, told in a unique style with fitting descriptions.
I loved almost every part of this book but to be honest I wasn’t keen on some of the characters other than John and Shep. But thankfully Shep brings life to this story that is inspired from a true event.
Coming from the country where these dogs come from, I could completely relate to this story. I just felt so angry at the character Martin and his sickening way he could treat such a beautiful, wonderful and intelligent dog such as Shep.
The ending is also one that stirred emotion in me and is sure to make anyone cry. I honestly couldn’t have written a better ending myself and felt it fitted so well. It is also very interesting to read the short piece on the historical event that is behind this tale, but I shall not give that part away.
All in all this is a great story for dog lovers everywhere.
