Clyde K. Kitchen has been in practice for over 36 years as a member of the Senior Active Staff of St. Jude Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology in Fullerton, Calif. With his experience in the care of eyes, Dr Kitchen has written this book packed with tons of information on taking care of the eyes which everyone knows are an extremely delicate and very essential part of ourselves.

Firstly I must point out that I am not a medical student myself and although many parts in this book were easy to follow, there were a few that were a little more difficult. However I think that for most people, whether you are buying this book to learn more about the conditions that can affect the eyes or are using this material purely for study purposes, most of the information is quite easy to follow.

From headaches through to itchy eyes. This is a very well presented essay and makes it easy to find the sections you require as they are clearly headed.

Throughout this composition there are diagrams of the eye pointing out various areas in the eye that can be affected. We explore Cataracts which as the author explains, is a common age-related eye problem. He notes that sixty percent of the population over the age of sixty have cataracts and that seventy percent of those over the age of seventy-five also have cataracts. Another scary point he makes, is that if we all live long enough we could all end up with this age-related problem!

So how can we get rid of it? Well Dr Kitchen advises eye surgery but this of course should only be performed depending on the intensity of the cataracts. Not something to look forward to but we must take care of our vision and take the specialists advice.  And who invented the first artificial lens? Well Dr Kitchen also answers that but you’ll have to get the book to discover these interesting facts.

Cancer of the eye is also explained although Dr Kitchen says that fortunately cancer does not often occur in the eyes. Primary cancers for instance retinoblastoma, happens during earliest childhood but is not often detected by doctors until the child is eighteen to twenty-four months of age. These are just some of the unusual eye problems and injuries.

Perhaps a little more easy to digest are listed some common eye drop medications. Anaesthetic eye drops help to numb the cornea for pain relief. Prescription allergy eye drops are more expensive but have a longer lasting influence on the affected eye.

At the end of this interesting book of essays about our eyes and our vision , Dr Kitchen has cleverly put together a glossary of all the eye problems jotted down in a simple way for you to understand. We have abrasions through to zonules-don’t ask me what that means, read the book! Migraines and dry eye, it’s all in this excellent book which is a mine of information and written in a lucid easy manner You will no doubt enrich your medical vocabulary too.
