Jillian Laurel Siegel is a shoplifter, a thief -- a booster. She doesn't do it out of necessity but out of a need to fill a void. It is instant gratification. She sees an item and it almost calls to her -- take me, I am yours.
Jillian is in advertising with a make-or-break presentation to stage. She is nervous, but boyfriend Alex assures her that she will do wonderfully. She looks great and knows her market. Alex's speculation couldn't be more off the mark. Jillian's presentation stinks. Loevner's can't use such marketing. Billy fires her. She bids farewell to Mrs. Dell'Rosa -- the woman who let her pay hide-and seek twenty years earlier.
What makes her feel better when everything goes to hell? A department store where there are lovely items to boost. The thrill of boosting will take her mind off being fired.
Secrets...too many secrets for Alex. He doesn't know why Jillian is missing for a couple of days, she has no reasonable excuse, and Alex decides he doesn't like the secrets Jillian appears to be harboring. Alex leaves Jillian. The relationship is over. She can't tell him where she was. If she did, he would know her secret.
What makes Jillian feel better when a relationship goes to hell than a counter full of items calling her to slip them into her bag? Jillian answers the call. This time, she meets another booster -- Shelly.
Shelly has had a rough life. Since meeting up with Viracocha De La Puente (Vira for short), she has someone to fill the father figure in her life. Gordo is like a big brother -- wisecracking and safe. Richardo, Claudia and the rest are family members, but remind me of real family members that you can't believe you're related to. Shelly's adopted family is nothing more than an international shoplifting ring. Jillian is sucked into the family, receives training, and is now a professional booster.
Meyer "Bingo" Loevner is Loevner's -- the department store of all department stores. And, he is something else -- Jillian's favorite uncle. He had been forced out of his store by the board. Craig Allen and he were partners -- in every sense of the word. Now, Bingo is very sick -- dying. Jillian wants out of the booster business. She turns to Bingo, but he is already too ill to offer her advice. She is on her own.
An exit plan. Everyone needs an exit plan and Jillian has hers. It will save others in the group of professional boosters, too -- Gordo and Shelly. Before they are caught in the "big job."
Jillian and Shelly meet up at a boutique. Shelly is concerned that she won't get through security with the goods. The first leg of Jillian's exit plan is about to take place. It will save Shelly. The lights and sirens go off. Shelly's face silently questions Jillian. Jillian walks through the doors as her friend is taken away.
The big job is Loevner's and who knows the store like Jillian? It was once her playground -- a fairyland. She was the princess there, and Uncle Bingo and Craig Allen were her knights. The second leg of her exit plan would take place. Gordo had a fifty/fifty chance of making it out. The others had to be stopped.
The scene is chaotic. The big job didn't go off as the group had planned. Everyone is running off in different directions. Jillian heads for a little and all-but-forgotten way out of the reach of the store detectives. Mrs. Dell'Rosa sees Jillian crouching in the cubbyhole where she long ago hid. The detectives question the store clerk; Mrs. Dell'Rosa doesn't give up the princess. Gordo makes it out, too.
Vira is arrested at the airport. Shelly's lawyer is mysteriously paid for; and Jillian learns that Bingo left her something in his will -- Loevner's Department Store.
There are penalties for being a booster -- losing your honest boyfriend, meeting up with other boosters, and being caught. The emotions run hot and the secrets are deep. But, the excitement that stealing things brings keeps Jillian returning for more. There are rewards for giving up the booster lifestyle -- winning back the honest boyfriend, being in charge of her second home (Loevner's), and returning everything she had ever stolen so her plate was clean. The excitement runs just as hot but the secrets are no more.
