What if Winning the Lottery Twice Is the Worst Thing That Happened to You?

“The Winner’s Circle” is an interesting story. Protagonist Jerry Nearing is barely scraping by. His house is in shambles, his wife is angry at him, and he knows the best money he can find means that he has to shovel his way into a pile of fresh manure. When a nest of rattle snakes attack, Jerry thinks his life may be over. It turns out it is just the beginning.

Jerry is instantly catapulted into the world of high fortune and getting anything you want when he wins the lottery the same day he is attacked by the rattle snakes. Jerry sees this as a way to make something of his life with his wife, Chelsea. They can finally have the children they both want and live in a house where the roof doesn’t leak. Chelsea, however, has other ideas. She wants the high life and the luxury to which her new status affords her. She wants to be known and to know. As Jerry and Chelsea drift farther apart, Jerry starts to believe that the money really isn’t worth it, after all.

“The Winner’s Circle” is an honest and heart-breaking look at what can happen to people when money gets in the way. Jerry soon joins the Winner’s Circle, a group of fellow millionaires who have won the lottery and lost at least part of their lives. Alone and lonely, Jerry wanders in and out of his new life, trying to find something that means something in his new life. Together with two of his new friends, Jerry begins to find meaning in his life again, even though Chelsea has long ago left him.

When Jerry wins the lottery again, it is hard to know who is lost in more disbelief—Jerry or the other people in his life.

“The Winner’s Circle” takes a real-life look at what winning the lottery can really do to people, even those who swear they will never let the money change them. As Jerry learns, sometimes being a part of “The Winner’s Circle” simply isn’t worth the admission fee.
