If you have ever shared your life with a cat, or two or more, Molly Brandenburg’s book, “Everyday Cat Excuses: Why ICan’t Do What You Want” gives you a pretty good glimpse into the thought process of your average house cat.You have probably heard every "excuse" in this book in multiple variations, from their mental debate between going inside or going outside to the “practical positive thinking for cats: I can kill it; I can gnaw it; I can eat it; then I can throw it up and push it under where nobody can see it” . If your cat(s) happen to have a dog, in that instance they’d get the dog to take care of it for them. In my house, they’d tell you that every cat needs one of those – an automatic blame sponge.
The illustrations that accompany each excuse are uncomplicated in execution but yet add another level of energy to the action they are conveying, such as with "I'm arching my back so I'll look big and scary" and "I'm screeching around the house in a frenzy." They remind me of the same energy level I have witnessed friend’s children on sugar – but then again that’s pretty much what living with a cat is like. The one I identify with the most is the headless cat investigation of the leftover cat food situation. Except in my case it’s the headless cat investigation of anything new in the house. No box or bag can forgo inspection at least half a dozen times if not more.
Molly Brandenburg has done a wonderful job of capturing life with a cat with humor and irony that will illicit numerous, “oh yeah, I know that very well” from many a cat lover and owner.I feel this will be a great little book to give to your favorite cat lover.
