Does anyone like midges? I really don’t know but if you like the Scots you will more than like this book which features 99 other “improbable” Scottish themed questions. I read through this in no time, between laughter and moments of “is that really true?”.
The questions inside are both oddly intriguing to the reader and also funny. A few of my favourite ones are: Is it true that Scottish fishermen can’t swim and has anyone actually ever been killed by the highland midges? Answers are bizarre and yet most speak the truth.
I have always wondered are bears now extinct from Scotland? I have found out my answer inside this fascinating read…will you?
As I read on, more and more wonderful questions and answers came up about this fascinating place - it just made me feel like grabbing my suitcase for the weekend and heading up to the highlands to find out if country dancing in Scotland is really as formal and “very stuffy” as Dunty Glennan says and whether seabirds ever form an important part of the Scottish diet.
I’m sure even Scots people will be intrigued to read this - mostly, I think, just to check and make sure the answers given are correct. After all, I find the Scots very proud and loyal of their country… why shouldn’t they be? It’s one of the only places in the world where you will find the kilt, lovely mountains and splendid food all in one place. One of its main attractions for me is certainly its mountainous landscape which makes it such a romantic location for many.
A question that is certainly mind-boggling is perhaps asked by Alec Glancy. He asks what is the greatest distance claimed to have been seen from Scotland. They say that from certain points in Yorkshire you are able to see Blackpool Tower… I can just about believe this but certainly not seeing something 250 miles away as they are able to do in a certain part of Scotland!
These questions and answers really are quite extraordinary and FASCINATING!
Jim Hewitson has, with the help of readers of the periodical The Exploding Haggis, written this perplexing yet splendid read. If you only take a moment or two to glance through this you will know what I mean!
A helpful index is also found at the back of this book which does help if you are looking for a certain subject.
Does Anyone Like Midges - a humorous title and astonishing book!
