Brandenburg has captured a cat’s nature through her words and artwork. Even if you don’t have a cat, you’ll understand what cats use as excuses to ignore our desires for them – like get off that table in front of the kitchen window – I know you think it’s a tanning bed, but we actually eat there!

Cats are so unlike dogs. Dogs play fetch – cats bring you “gifts of dead, mold-covered mice.” Dogs show they are happy to see you by wagging their tails – cats barely noticed you were gone (too busy playing in the trashcan – “investigating the leftover cat food situation”). Dogs get into a frenzy burying their chew bones – cats get high on catnip. And if you’ve never seen a cat try to hack up a hairball, don’t miss Brandenburg’s artistic layout. It is hilarious – and real!!

Having six cats, I can attest to the validity of Brandenburg’s work. She has nailed the cat’s nature to the canvas for all to see. I certainly hope she writes and illustrates another such book – to include cats that have their own schedules (that never coincide with owners); the cats that must take medication; those fascinated with the owner’s call of nature; and a simple trip to the vet.

“Everyday Cat Excuses” is reasonable priced at $7.95 (US). If you have a cat-lover in the family, or know someone who may be thinking about getting a cat – get this book for them. It’s sure to bring a smile – then a chuckle.
