What is a Chookie or what about a bawkie? If you have a love for the Scottish language  and wildlife than this book should suit you. It comes in a handy size so if you fancy a ramble in the Highlands but find you can’t understand the dialect when referring to the “beasties” this will surely come in useful.

In Scottish Wildlife you will explore all sorts of words that refer to animals, from our feathered friends to little rodents and even fish. I’m pretty sure this will excite everyone who has a passion for animals like myself.

The delicate drawings that appear on each new chapter also capture your attention, especially the one of a dormouse with a nut in his paw.

Hedger is a brilliant word for hedgehogs - I think I shall start to use this from now on. This is the effect this little gem has on you. You see words that you didn’t know existed and within a moment or two you’ll find you can’t help using the name when referring to the featured animal.

Chris also explains to us how these beasts got their names and why, as well as where to find them and how to recognise them. She advices visiting the Scottish Highlands and forests so you can get a better feel when you use the correct Scottish name for the creatures.

At the end of this gem is an epilogue with some riddles. One I particularly liked was: “The laverock and the lark, the bawkie and the bat, the heather-bleet, the mire-snipe, how many burds be that?”  Answers are also included for you to get your teeth into.

Also some poetry from famous names is in here too.

This little book is well set out with an interesting front cover featuring a deer. You can keep this lovely booklet on the shelf next to your wildlife books so that next time you fancy a trip to the Highlands you can really “say it in Scots!”
