What an amazing story, one that you’ll find you are unable to put down.  Paul Miller has wanted to write this, his first novel for fifty plus years and now he has produced this excellent tale. Events which happened during the years of his  young life helped him and gave him the inspiration.

Paul was only eight years old when his family decided to up sticks and move from Detroit. His world was turned upside down. Why? Was all he wanted to know but no one would explain.  The boy found it hard to understand how his parents could just go and leave behind his sisters and brother. His brother was handicapped and Paul cared deeply for him. However moving was to quickly become a way of life, first to Florida, California and back again to Detroit.

Paul felt so alone throughout these years. Making friends only to have to move on and leave them behind too. No one seemed to care or even acknowledge his existence at times although along the way Paul met Noah, a wise deep thinker of a man who Paul never forgot. He was to remember Noah’s words of wisdom, as things got steadily worse.

Struggling against poverty, hunger and loneliness he drifted off course.  His Father’s moodiness and violence became too much to take any more.  At twelve years of age “ a boy should be thinking about ball games, not being worried by all this stuff”.

Life on the Highway is threatening, terrifying and in Detroit he mixes with the wrong type and the thugs of Los Angeles belonged to another world.

At fourteen years life took a turn for the better but will it last, can it last?

I really enjoyed this book and I felt so much sympathy for this young boy on the harsh journey through his childhood years in such a harsh, cruel and unforgiving world.

The story didn’t end there, there is so much more to come and his heart was to break and take a long time to mend. Did God really care? Paul struggled to find self worth and a place for himself and as I read the tears were never far away in my own eyes.

You want to keep turning the pages to find out if he ever does find somewhere he belongs, among people who can offer security, affection, give him that confidence in himself for which he so dearly yearns and most of all somewhere he can call home.

You pray for a happy ending but is there such a thing?

In this wonderful book you discover how life moulds you into the person you are from the family who either love or reject you and friends who may betray you too. Sometimes it is strangers who can find just the right words to make a difference. Paul Miller has written a touching story but there are flashes of humour to be found too..

Read it you won’t be disappointed.
