Today, Norm Goldman Publisher & Editor of bookpleasures.com is excited to have as our guest D Anthony author of The Nurse in the Delivery Room Slapped Me…Once.

Good day D Anthony and thanks for participating in our interview.

D Anthony

Thank you and your readers for having an interest and being willing to invest the time.

Norm:

Please tell our readers a little bit about your personal and professional background.

D Anthony:

Well, as I mention in my book, “The Nurse in the Delivery Room Slapped Me… Once: Stories and Perspectives to Help You Unlock Your Amazing Potential” the important thing for readers to note is that I am not a doctor – and have no related certifications of any kind. I am merely someone blessed with the need to, since long ago when I was a child, always ask why, and cursed with the need to then seek the logical answer.

The only degree on my proverbial wall is a Bachelor’s in Computer Based Information Management. And that’s the direction I was heading in, fully immersed on my chosen technical career path (including programmer, PC support specialist and telecommunications management) – then life, as I knew it, ceased to exist. Just like that, my mom was unapologetically and unceremoniously taken away. I was devastated. I had much heartache. I had much anger. And there was little fairness, meaning or purpose in it all to be found. My mom simply wasn’t here anymore and nothing else mattered – not even life itself. I wrote something to release some of my pent-up feelings. It proved therapeutic. I wrote some more. I realized it was therapeutic for others. The more I wrote, the more I had to say. And in time, the wonder of life again began to take hold, revealing an even more inspired and motivated me – bolstered with true purpose in life now fully understood. And I’ve been writing since…

Norm:

Did you have a set plan when writing your book or was it improvisational?

D Anthony

Definitely improvisational… In fact, some of the earlier stories, poems and maxims in the book, weren’t written for the book. They were originally written as rotational content for the inspirational website I founded eight years (or so) ago, SomethingToShare.com. Based on testimonials from site guests about how helpful the passages were however, it occurred to me that I needed to expand the audience… I needed to compose enough content to publish my first motivational and inspirational book. And a lot of writing, a lot of learning, and a number of sleep deprived nights… has me here…

Norm:

What's the most difficult thing for you about writing your book?

D Anthony

I would say maintaining my focus on all of the administrative tasks necessary to complete the book – when what I really wanted, and felt like I needed, to do was to just keep writing. Now that the book is completed, the internal conflict continues over the time required for marketing.

Norm:

What has been your overall experience as a published author?

D Anthony:

The experience of being a published author has been remarkable. The book is significantly expanding the audience for the inspirational and motivational message. The volume of positive feedback, complimenting the relevance of the passages and the potential impact they could have, and are having, in readers’ lives has been absolutely incredible thus far. Similarly receiving so many heartfelt reviews and perspectives to this point, complimenting the writing style and degree to which the individual passages are engaging, have further motivated me, as well. Like the terrific Bookpleasures.com review from you Norm (again thank you)… Bottom line, I’m just grateful and very much inspired by the unbelievably positive energy I’m receiving.

Norm:

Do you feel that writers, regardless of genre owe something to readers, if not, why not, if so, why and what would that be?

D Anthony:

I definitely believe writers owe something to their readers. To some degree, I think most every writer has the responsibility to grab and hold the attention of the reader. In the inspirational and motivational genre, I believe there is a particular requirement to uplift, challenge and educate - and hopefully leave the reader with something new, meaningful and relevant to consider.

Norm:

Would you say that the publication of The Nurse in the Delivery Room Slapped Me…Once is the culmination of a life long dream? And as a follow up, what motivated you to write the book?

D Anthony:

Not so much the culmination of a life long dream as a significant step in my perceived intended purpose in life. I feel eternally blessed to have the passionate, inspired, appreciative, ever-questioning and ever-striving perspective and attitude I have. And I believe my mission is to pass that sense of hope, inspiration and fortitude to anyone interested in living a better life – and getting more out of each day. And that’s a big part of my motivation for writing the book and everything else I’m working on. Inspiration is one of the most wonderful, life-altering gifts we can possibly give to ourselves and our loved ones. And my dream is that massive quantities of us come to realize that we, both individually and collectively, actually have so much to share.

Norm:

Where did you get your information and ideas for The Nurse in the Delivery Room Slapped Me…Once?

D Anthony:

In a word – life... The ironic thing is I am not a detail person. For some reason, detail just isn’t what my brain has ever tended to prioritize, or these days even maintain. To the contrary, the way I see the world, and the events that happen around me, is through a conceptual filter of sorts. As a result, I will often times recognize value in seemingly the most mundane of day to day events – conceptually linking that event with otherwise completely unrelated events or things experienced, seen or heard, perhaps many, many years prior, perhaps not until some point in the future – to ultimately derive some, for me anyway… fundamental truth. Of course, because I tend to see things through that conceptual filter, I’m probably not your best source for good driving directions…

Norm

How has your environment and/or upbringing influenced your writing?

D Anthony:

My environment is, in part, the inspiration for my writing - as I tend to question, consider, ponder the possibilities about and write about what I experience, hear and see. My upbringing - now that’s the foundation. My sense of purpose, commitment, diligence, perseverance, caring, faith and belief in self all, I believe, were positively influenced by watching and learning from so many of the individuals who had a hand in raising, caring for, teaching and interacting with me during my formative years. I’m sure I could readily map most of the core values expressed throughout the book to my mother, father, teachers, neighbors and so many others. Ultimately, I guess I endeavor to repay each of them for what they gave me by passing my message of inspiration, quality of life, purpose and potential along.

Norm:

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing and what tools do you feel are must-haves for writers?

D Anthony:

This may be somewhat genre specific, but I think the best writing comes not only from the mind – but from the heart. And it is real, honest and moving. I’ve been fortunate enough to have readers tell me that the content in “The Nurse in the Delivery Room Slapped Me… Once” is insightful, frank and honest. I’ve been told the book is easily understood, concise and an easy read. I’ve been told that the book can be challenging. I’ve been told each of the life stories takes the reader on a journey. I’ve been told the book has been designated for use in specifically reserved get away spots – with those respective reserved spots including a lunchtime bench with birds singing in the background, during extended bath-times with candles lit and specially for when seated on the ‘John’. I’ve heard of a husband and wife that were reading the book separately, and discussing the individual life stories and the relevance to their lives, over breakfast each morning. I’d like to believe these all, collectively, offer evidence on behalf of elements of good writing in the book.

Norm:

How do you measure success?

D Anthony:

Have my efforts helped to facilitate positive impact in people’s lives? Are readers being effectively challenged to begin to question more, dream more and see differently? Am I actually helping the world to be a better place? Stuff like that…

Norm:

Do you worry about the human race?

D Anthony:

I’m deeply concerned on the behalf of those who legitimately cannot fend for themselves. I’m deeply concerned on behalf of the youth… the messages, values and life lessons they are receiving and the limited expectations, paradigms and the nature of the potentially life-long outlooks being set.

Norm:

Do you ever feel that you are preaching to the converted and that those who need most to read your book ignore it?

D Anthony:

Without a doubt… And I must admit, sometimes it gets a little frustrating… conversing with people unhappy with the direction their lives are headed, offering them a message they can use to begin to turn things around – and them not being willing to give it an honest try. It reminds me of an anecdote I came across, which I share in the book. A young man stops at a porch and queries an older gentleman in a rocking chair – “Is that your dog moaning… is something wrong with him?” The older gentleman responds, “Oh, he’s just lying on a nail… that’s all.” The young man presses further, “Well, why doesn’t he simply get off of the nail?” “It’s not hurting him that bad, I guess”, was the response.

So, when it comes to those who most need to read the book, my job is to endeavor to help them consider that life is both precious and fleeting, our yesterdays don’t have to define our ‘todays’ and there’s a much more enjoyable and fulfilling life waiting beyond the nail. My job is to endeavor to help them to realize that nail… it’s not going to be the one that moves.

Norm:

Are you working on any books/projects that you would like to share with us? (We would love to hear all about them!)

D Anthony:

Another motivational and inspirational book, with more stories and perspectives, is in the works – however, it’s likely to be a while before it sees the light of day. My inspirational website, www.SomethingToShare.com is due for a bit of a makeover, which should happen in the coming months. It is most definitely a great place for your readers to visit for a little perspective to help make it through the day, for those trying to deal with the loss of a loved one and for those who have inspirational life stories and poems they might like to share.

SomethingToShare Inspirational Plaques are available with beautiful images of nature and uplifting messages at http://www.somethingtoshare.com/Plaques/Main_InspirationalPlaques.shtm.

They are a great source for daily inspiration – and perfect for the home and office. And last but not least, I’ve begun writing a blog. Your readers can learn more about the book, the road to greater happiness and fulfillment and everything else that’ll be going on at http://inspirationalpoemsandbooks.blogspot.com/.

Norm:

Although you are not leaving us just yet, how do you want to be remembered?

D Anthony:

He strived to make the world a better place – and you know what… it is. He seemed truly happy and fulfilled… I guess he practiced what he preached after all. I’ll bet his mom and dad are really proud of him. What changes do you think he’s trying to inspire… and how do you think his writing is going over… in heaven? And finally, which one of his books should I read again… first?

Norm:

article The Discovery of Luminous Being by Anthony Maulucci
The title, The Discovery of Luminous Being, led me to believe that I was about to read a novel about an alien, who glows in the dark. However, after reading the first few paragraphs, I knew this was not to be, and frankly I was not disappointed. Novelist Anthony Maulucci delivered something far different, and his principle character, Raphael Trager, is certainly no alien. In fact, Raphael is someone, who probably is familiar to many of us. After graduating from Wesleyan University in...
