Author: Michael Cohen

Publisher: Outskirts Press

ISBN: 1-4327-0329-3

Michael Cohen lives with wife Dahlia their three sons and grandchildren in Queens, New York. He is a dynamic leader who serves as the president of the Jewish Sephardic community. He has recently headed two Afghan - Jewish delegations with the elected president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai. He helps to bridge religions and enhance American - Afghanistan - Israeli ties.

The Jewish faith is interwoven throughout the pages of this inspiring, fascinating story of Michael Cohen’s journey to three countries with all the trials and joys involved.

The sixties was a beautiful, prosperous era in Afghanistan as Michael grew up in a close-knit Jewish community. No one wanted to immigrate to the Holy Land but when the students began to demonstrate and things got very difficult, Michael tried to convince his father that it was time to leave.

Michael would listen on his transistor radio to what was happening in the world. There was tension between Israel and its Arab neighbours.

Feeling threatened the family made an emotional move to Israel which took a lot of organization, only getting visas by saying they were going to attend a relative’s wedding.

Michael had to grow up quickly to give support to his father and family. They were greatly helped by the Jewish agency although the Jewish community always look out for each other and stick together through thick and thin. This does come across quite forcibly in the book which is full of detail.

When Michael is drafted into the Israeli army nothing is left out. He is a strong character with great determination and his respect for others is without doubt as is his love for G-d (as it is written).

When his service is finished in the army he returned to a very sad people because of all the blood shed in the Yom Kippur war and he then began work in the Aviator industry.

After great persuasion from his father again, Michael moved to America where he studied precious stones - a job he loved. He also loved America and settled in very well.

Eventually he met and married Dahlia and had two sons. He became a well respected buyer and seller of emeralds.

The end of the book brings Michael to the brink of returning to Israel but with the option of returning to America one day in the future.

There is quite a lot of repetition in the account but you are swept along wanting to know what is going to happen next in Michael’s journey through all the different cultures. Michael intended this book to be a chronicle of his family for future generations complete with photographs and you have to admire his strong, deep religious faith and courage which helps him throughout his life and relationships.

I look forward to his continued biography - out soon. A heart-warming read.
