Eileen Rennison has lived most of her life in Yorkshire. She was born in the North Riding and loves the Yorkshire countryside very much with its folklore, dialect, social history and architecture. Eileen has written two other books about Yorkshire as well as many other articles.
North Yorkshire was created as the administrative county in 1974 during the reorganisation of boundaries. It has many attractions being choc full of historical places, from its ancient castles, abbeys and churches to its simply astonishing variety of splendid sights. It is one county not to be missed!
North Yorkshire is home to towns and cities and villages such as historical York, windy Whitby and many more. This is a delightful book which highlights many of them.
If you’ve ever been a visitor to Brimham Rocks, it will surely stay in your mind for a long time after. Each rock looks as if it is almost representing an animal of some kind, from the dancing bear to an elephant. Indeed it is true that people come from all over the world to pay a visit to this menagerie of rocks, including those of you from America.
Eileen explores why it is such a popular place and gives you instructions on how to arrive there. There is also a hand-drawn picture of one of the many rock formations that can be found at Brimham, drawn by Eileen’s artistic husband Philip. You will find quite a few of these clever and attractive drawings throughout these pages.
Aysgarth Falls cascade over rocky crags on the river Yore. The Lower Falls further down stream are the most spectacular but are a sight not to be missed.
There are innumerable waterfalls around this district often to be reached by wooded footpaths.
Burnsall on the bend of the river Wharfe is a picturesque village where many artists are to be seen painting the scene. A perfect place too for picnickers to sit on the banks of the river. An annual fell race is run every August to the top of Burnsall Fell and down again.
Not very far away from this beautiful village is the limestone gorge called Trollers Ghyll said to be the haunt of trolls and a spectral hound known as the Barguest which if seen, foretells death. The gorge feels very eerie and can play tricks with the imagination.Take my word for this!
Also mentioned in this delightful book is the Buttertubs Pass which are pits in the limestone rock and vary in depth to a hundred feet. The name comes from their similarity to the old fashioned buttertubs. A phenomenon not to be missed.
Another attractive village lying in the shadow of the Hambleton Hills is Kilburn. On the hill above is a huge white horse cut into the side of the hill. Three hundred and fourteen feet long and two hundred and twenty eight feet high.
The workshop of the famous woodcarver Robert Thomson is also in the village. A little mouse is carved on each piece of work that he creates. He is well known throughout the world. You must pay a visit here.
Many of these places are tucked away from the usual tourist places but are worth discovering . This is a wonderful book just to read from your armchair but it will definitely give you the urge go out and explore North Yorkshire for yourself.
