Little Grapes on the Vine

Samantha Gianulis

ISBN: 9-787774-583809

From the moment I open the book I was hooked! Food – who doesn’t like that subject? But “Little Grapes on the Vine” is not just a cookbook. Personal stories compliment the easiest mouth-watering recipes that even I, a cake-in-the-box-girl, could make.

The first story is about how Samantha and Pete met – on a sandy Caribbean beach. Pete was Greek – she was not. And, so it began. When the wedding day came, Pete’s mother baked and served her famous Baklava – Samantha took this as her blessing. The Baklava recipe follows, as do other wonderful stories Gianulis so graciously shares. Even if I couldn’t figure out the knobs on the stove, “Little Grapes on the Vine” is worth it’s sauce for the stories.

“Little Grapes on the Vine” is destined to be a best seller. How can it miss with chapters like – “Chop, ‘Cause I Really Love You” or “Headache Cake?” This cooking storybook would make a perfect gift for brides, mothers, mothers-in-law, friends, neighbors, sweethearts, or that someone who wants to cook but can’t quite get it right.

Everyone must learn to cook (mothers and grandmothers would have you believe they were born with the ladle in their hand). Samantha Gianulis was no different. She recounts the first time she decided to prepare chicken breasts. Let’s just say that she was grateful for “salt, pepper, and ketchup.”

If Gianulis couldn’t write so beautifully, cook so well, or make us wish we had married into a Greek family, she would have been a hit the comedy hour. The book is witty, warm, fun, and brimming with recipes that are tried and tested.

I highly recommend this book.

For me, one of the most comforting genres is the essayistic cookbook, a kind of “food prose” with recipes thrown in. And “Little Grapes on the Vine” definitely fits the bill when it comes to comfort reads.Samatha Gianulis creates a memoir around food and family, inextricably connected and intertwined, one...
