The first rule [and pretty much only rule] of “cat club” is that you don’t own them, they own you and your job is to be at their beck and call. It’s like being a personal assistant without the perks of a monetary return. I myself have been “owned” by cats pretty much all my life and just in the past few years have I learned first hand what it’s like to be “shared” by more than one [we’re now up to three]. So upon reading Dena Harris’ book, Lessons In Stalking, it’s nice to find out that some of their quirky behavior, though not textbook in any way shape of form, is more common that one would think in the cat world. My sister [who’s “shared” by four] felt better to know that she is not alone in discovering floating mice in the water bowl. The reason why is still completely unknown to us and will always probably be that way, but it’s still nice to know the need to drown fake furry mice is not a once in a lifetime fluke.
Dena Harris’ voice in her writing reminds me of the wry view of life that Erma Bombeck has. The absurdity of life just has to be laughed at, be the cause two legged kids or four legged kids. This book is filled with an assortment of humorous incidents that any cat lover could identify with and appreciate. You will probably find yourself saying, “oh yeah, been there with mine” over some or all of the tidbits. The stories are collected and told in the same way that any pet owner will admit to telling on their own. A collective to make you laugh, shake your head, and remark how crazy/silly/nuts the pets in our lives are. For any cat lover in your life, this would be an appreciated book to have.
