Warning: reading this book might turn you into a germ freak. Here is a
simple test: how disturbing do you find the following fact? "Shopping
carts have failed more hygiene tests than public restrooms" and "21 percent
of them tested positive for blood, mucus, urine or saliva"? If you are now
reaching for a disinfectant wipe, then you are probably a candidate for
germ freakhood. But that's alright; germ freaks may get surprised glances,
but they also have a knack for avoiding illnesses caused by (guess what?)
germs.
"Germ Freak" is a humorous book but Janse is dead serious about germ
avoidance, organizing the first section of her book into chapters called
"tactics" and including a scientific treatise on individual germs. Part
two contains home care advice, as well as tips for avoiding germs in public
places, and part three offers specific tips for parents.
Even if you don't start opening public doors with a paper towel after
reading Janse's book, there is a load of information here for anyone
interested in practical ways to avoid germ-caused illness. Now where did
I put that disinfectant wipe . . .
