Misadventures & Merfolk: The Tale of a Seaside Village Gone Mad by Kelly Reno

The following review was contributed by TAMY BRADY

Brendan James is a travel writer. He's had one successful novel and one horrible flop. He's now on the search in the British Isles for ideas for his third novel, that will either make or break his writing career. Unfortunately, he finds nothing in these islands except sheep and his deadline has come and gone. With panic setting in, Brendan attends the Mermaid Festival in Heather Bay on the Isle of Sky.

This event celebrates the anniversary of a mermaid who fell in love with a man. It features parades and shows unlike any other festival. Although unlike other festivals, this event features matchmaking events, strange creatures, and people claiming to be the descendants of real merfolk.

Misadventures & Merfolk is a hilarious fantasy with a romantic twist or two. A great story about being at the darkest point in your life and finding a new way that you never even knew existed. A book about using the heart to make decisions and not the head. However, the best part of this book is the unique mix of characters. Some of the characters are completely normal, realistic, everyday people thrown into extraordinary situations. Others are completely off their rockers and remind the reader of that weird aunt or uncle that nobody talks about in public.

The following review was contributed by CAROLYN HOWARD-JOHNSON In the acknowledgements of Before You Forget, Kelly Dumar, M. Ed., tells us that this is a book with a fairy godmother. I believe if this educator and avid diarist convinces only one person to keep a diary for posterity that she will be the fairy godmother. As a novelist who is believes that much of the world's best fiction (Williams, Faulkner) springs from true stories and family experiences, I, too, try to convince...

The following review was contributed by: LILY AZERAD-GOLDMAN Kelly Jones has created a delightful toddler’s story seen through the eyes of his big sister, who translates all his wishes that he expresses in one word: “Mama.” In clear and simple language, we follow the siblings in a day of their activities. Friendly and protective, big sister is far from being jealous of her cute little brother. For example: “I play in the schoolyard ‘til the morning bell rings. Mom picks up my...

article A Caribbean Tale
Author: Rudy GurleyISBN: 1427605351If there is one element that sets apart interesting personal narratives from those that are downright boring, it is the narrator’s ability to take on the role analogous to that of an actor in a drama who vividly and effectively shares his or her experiences with the reader. These experiences can be built around one single remarkable event or it may be of a general tale comprising several events in one’s life. What is vital is that the author must clearly...
