Looking at this book, one would never guess the marvels inside its cover. The jacket is a stark white (which intrigued me), arial black lettering and a whisper that calls for me to open the book up.

While I am not an expert in design or merchandising campaigns, I found the concepts easy to digest and the illustrations and photographs exciting. The phrase about a picture worth a thousand words never made more sense. This work, an explanation of design, is understood completely without reading. Textures are so real that one might even believe there is an aroma of the snakeskin paper towel and the play on color might have you hearing the clock on the wrist.
The illusions communicate to our inner or subconscious feelings and bring them to the surface so that we may taste, smell, touch, see, and hear them. Hara’s art opens up doors of our souls that are left untouched by many other designers. I felt my senses spring to life and a freshness that I have not seen in other merchandising work. Even a piece of macaroni has been made more appealing with Hara’s masterful eye for design.
This book is not for everyone – only those who want to get in touch with their inner self by understanding Hara’s artwork and how it plays in merchandising campaigns. I would like to see more of this on American billboards, posters, and commercials. It’s pleasing, soothing, and would certainly cause me to buy the power outlet that appears to be giving birth. Kenya Hara is a master.
