Daniel Martin was among one of those unfortunate types of people who experimented with drugs from an early age and was unable to free himself from the lure of addiction.
To pin point Martin’s problems, he starts off by explaining how it all started in early childhood. Martin had a lot of stepfathers who came and went - his mother was always marrying some man or other - and unfortunately there were some who became quite abusive towards Martin. One stepfather in particular took a dislike to him and used a vacuum cleaner cord to inflict as much pain as possible. Other weapons included toy race tracks.
It seems pretty clear to me, even as a reader, that this is probably what was at the root of Martin’s problems. Physical abuse does not only leave physical scars on our bodies but mental ones too that often penetrate us deeper then we might think.
Martin also suffered from night terrors causing him to run around his bedroom at night and bite his knuckles with fear. Because of the night terrors, it prevented Martin staying at his friends’ houses for fear of embarrassment.
One time his friend was witness to his night- time panics and told his friends the next day at school.Martin became quickly humiliated and bullied - feeling he was completely unable to fit in.Because of this, he started running away from school and by the time Martin was a teenager, it was a habit.
Being out of school so much led Martin into bad ways and once he mixed with the wrong crowd, he became introduced to the addictions of drugs. Pot and other intoxicating substances had him hooked so much, he found himself being led into male prostitution to fund his habits.
I learnt quickly as I read on that drugs do awful things to people and turn what once was a nice boy into a monster who stole, had the morals of an alley cat and killed innocent creatures for kicks, including a poor unsuspecting squirrel.
I certainly would not have liked to meet Martin on a dark night.
The author goes onto explain how he tried to get clean but failed. He met a lot of people who offered him help but so often Martin found himself spiralling back out of control. He married young to a girl named Peggy, who herself was no stranger to drugs, and after a day filled with opium and crystal meth they experimented with ecstasy.
However as is predicted, all did not run smoothly for them. Would Martin ever be “clean”?
The next part of this book explores the author’s relationship to Christianity and other religions. I’m afraid I was lost here - being what one would call a non-believer - but I suppose if we each have something to believe in then God, or whatever else you might call it, can work miracles.
A harrowing tale of how a homeless man who couldn’t see the light at the end of a long and lonely tunnel overcame his ordeal to tell his story today. He hopes we should all learn from what he’s been through and that if you are ever in a similar position - just say the word no. I say yes to this book.
