In The Unnatural Inquirer Simon R. Green's popular character John Taylor is back for more butt kicking, sarcastic humor, and a nice bit of paranormal detective work. For those unfamiliar with Green's wry genre mixing he is the master of mixing the noir detective novel, with a fantastical paranormal setting, creating something fresh and new. John Taylor is the classic Green protagonist; a wise cracking, disaster causing (and averting), mythic figure in a neighborhood full of wise cracking mythic bad guys. Taylor is a private detective in the 'Nightside', a small sub neighborhood located in the black dark heart of London. The Nightsides most notorious gossip rag, 'The Unnatural Inquirer', has just offered Taylor a huge sum of money to track down one Pen Donavon. They believe Donavon has managed to tape an image of the afterlife on his souped up television set and he's offered them the exclusive. However many forces are at work, each one after the DVD for their own reasons, and the Enquirer fears that someone will scoop their scoop. Armed only with his witty repertoire and a sexy demon sidekick can Taylor find Donavon before the deadline falls?

Readers who have never heard of Simon R. Green will fall in love with his witty and no-nonsense John Taylor. Fans of Simon R. Green will find The Unnatural Enquirer to be right up their ally. But many readers who are familiar with the other books by this prolific author will find themselves wondering if he can write something a little different. Is The Unnatural Enquirer a fun read? Certainly. Is it something different then what other authors have to offer? Absolutely. But is it any different then the other Green books? Not particularly. Some readers will think that sounds great, others will want something a little less formulaic.

If The Unnatural Enquirer had been the first Green book I'd read I would be raving about what a fun romp it is through a dark imaginative world, but as a reader who has read many of his novels I wanted to see him do something else. I actually had to stop every so often and remind myself that the main character in this book was John Taylor. The character is so similar to other Green protagonists (most notably the male half of Hawk and Fisher or even the man with the golden torc minus the torc) that I started to wonder why not he has several different series going on at all. The same type of character, in the same type of neighborhood, the only 'difference' being that Taylor is a private detective as opposed to a police detective like the protagonists of the Hawk and Fisher books. The Unnatural Inquirer is as a fine a book as any of the other Green novels but it's hard to shake the feeling of "been there, done that" after reading more than two or three.
