Today, Norm Goldman, Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com is pleased to have as our guest, Louis Panesi author of A Father’s Abuse…A Doctor’s Love: The Powerful Story of a Tortured Boy Who Prevailed With the Help of a Very Special Doctor

Good day Lou and thanks for participating in our interview.

Norm:

It takes a great deal of courage to share your family secrets with the world. What motivated you to write A Father’s Abuse?

Lou

Dr. Shoemaker told me to write this book 30 years ago. Plus, I thought it would be educational and insightful for others.

Norm:

How did you manage to remember your conversations with your psychiatrist Dr. Shoemaker?

Lou:

I remember everything between Dr. Shoemaker and me like it was yesterday. It is ingrained in my mind. I still think of him every day.

Norm:

What's the most difficult thing for you about writing your book?

Lou:

Thinking about how fortunate I was to have met Dr. Shoemaker was continually on my mind as I wrote the book.

I cried a lot during the writing just reliving our conversations. I know he saved my life.

Norm:

Why do you feel that this was an important book for you to write and for all of us to read at this time? What are your hopes for this book?

Lou:

I needed to tell this story. I wanted to honor a great and brilliant man and to pass on his knowledge to others.

My hope is that it will open peoples’ eyes to good therapy done right. I hope it helps people that suffer from depression.

Norm:

When you set out to write your book was it improvisational or did you have a plan?

Lou:

It was improvisational. I wrote a chapter every morning. Each chapter started where the previous one left off. It was all "off the cuff" writing.

Norm:

Is your book self-published? If so, what has been your experience with self-publishing? What has been your overall experience as a published author?

Lou:

Yes, I self published. It was easy because I hired a self publishing expert that walked me through the entire process.

Her name is Nancy Cleary and her company is Wyatt MacKenzie Publishing in Oregon.

As for my overall experience as a published author, it's pretty cool. I've been reading books my whole life and I've probably ordered 500 books off of Amazon. The first time I saw it listed on Amazon was quite a thrill.

Norm:

Are you still seeing a psychiatrist?

Lou:

Yes. I still suffer from depression. I also take medication for depression.

Norm:

You mention in your bio and in your book that you became an airline pilot. Perhaps you would like to tell us a little about your occupation and did your childhood and young adult experiences in any way hamper your career? If so, how?

Lou:

I was hired by a major airline in 1986. I could have been hired 5 years earlier but I was not ready emotionally. I suffered from depression during my whole career but I was always able to do my job. When my trips were over I went home to be alone and be by myself. One part of me never seemed to get over the trauma of my youth.

Norm:

What has been the reaction of your friends and family to your book? Have they been supportive?

Lou:

95% supportive. I have 2 aunts that refuse to read the book and said they will never talk to me again. They are my grandfather's daughters.

Norm:

How will you be marketing your book? Will you be using the Internet and if so, how?

Lou:

I am currently doing radio interviews. Plus having people like you put your review in different publications helps a lot.

Norm:

Where can we find out more about yourself and your book?

Lou:

My website: www.afathersabuse.com

Norm:

Is there anything else you wish to add that we have not covered and what is next for Lou Panesi?

Lou:

I'm looking for an agent. I think this story would make a good movie. Don't you think?

Thanks once again and good luck with all of your future endeavors.
