In 1986 Janine Shepherd was hit by a truck and was told she would never walk again. Not only did she stagger doctors by learning to walk again she also became a commercial pilot and aerobatics instructor. To add more joy to her life, she married and had three adorable children - yet again defying the medical opinions that this would surely be an impossible task.
Shepherd and husband Tim decided they needed a change and opted for a farm. Moving to the Southern Highlands where Shepherd’s love for horses grew and saw her ride a horse perfectly.Days with her daughter teaching her the joys of horse riding, filled Shepherd with happiness. To just be free with nature and live every moment was her ambition and she would do this a lot while Tim was away on business trips.
Yet one day a phone call from flight operations changed her life for good. The awful words sound out from the receiver: “I am calling to let you know that your husband has fallen sick…”
Shepherd knew Tim’s worst fears were getting ill while on trips and she felt so helpless to do anything.
Tim later returned home and thankfully made what seemed like a recovery. Yet Shepherd’s life with Tim was about to change again, certainly not for the better. This illness has seemed to affect Tim, not just physically but mentally and left him prone to moodiness. Something that was totally out of character.
When Tim gets offered a new slot at work, he gradually grows distant from his ever-hopeful wife and lashes out at the children.
She recalls an example of this saying how he got angry and lost his patience at their lovely daughter because she had disturbed him. Shepherd felt an incredibly strong needto protect her daughter at this time.Tim’s moods did not change much and some days Shepherd would feel so miserable.
Was this fair on Shepherd? After all she had been through, life it seemed had dealt her another blow.
This is a brutally honest account of Shepherd’s struggle to save herself and her family from a devastating illness that really did threaten to destroy everything she held dear.
Another tear-jerking read from bestselling author Ms Shepherd. I enjoyed this so much yet again and say well done to Janine for writing another brilliant novel!
