Everyone has heard the word, probably knows someone with it, but do we really know why it’s epidemic? I know what diabetes is – a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal – my two friends have it. But I did not know about the billions of dollars that are being made “causing” and “treating” this serious malady.  In fact, Spero poses that the same social conditions that cause Type 2 Diabetes also causes “other chronic illnesses.” And the answer is personal power.

Well, I was skeptical. I read books and have interviewed authors who believe that there’s nothing better than personal power. But what did this have to do with diabetes? In the end, I learned that it has everything to do with diabetes – and other illnesses, as well.

Spero believes the reader must have a basic understanding of diabetes.  Diabetes 101 introduces the reader to what it is; what it does; and presents a brief history of diabetes.

“A tidal wave, a flood of diabetes is sweeping over the world. It afflicts about 300 million people, an increase of almost 400% in the last 10 years. It cripples communities. It bankrupts health care systems. About 10 million people a year die from it (more than from AIDS). It’s getting worse: about 400 million people are pre-diabetic, on their way to full-blown illness.” Some physicians and “health writers” say it’s a genetic curse, “result of bad behavior, or some combination of the two.” Spero claims it’s a social disease. With all the sugars, high stress, little social support, and very few opportunities to exercise or feel good about ourselves sets us up for illness. We eat junk food; frequently visit fast-food restaurants; have cell phones, computers, remote controlled everything and more that keeps us planted in our seats; and are bombarded with get-skinny-now ads, use this shampoo to look like a model, and shop here if you want to be in vogue. We have lost the reasons to walk; are living in a fast-paced society (too fast to shop and eat what is good for us); the convenient life has left us ill. No matter how skinny, how shiny, or how well dressed we are – seems we are still to blame for whatever is “wrong” with us.

Spero claims that those who get very little to eat and must walk as their only mode of transportation are least likely to get diabetes. However, those slightly up the chain – those that suffer toxic sugar, high levels of stress, are inactive, and suffer from inequality – they are more likely to also suffer diabetes. And instead of focusing on the underlying reason for diabetes, the healthcare system tunnels its vision on “genetics, biochemistry, and other avenues that lead to drug therapy as the primary solutions.”

Can people make a difference with regard to diabetes? Spero believes so – his six points include social justice and a healthier food environment. And a movement is what it will take.

This book ties together a picture that we all might want to have a closer look at. From the medical mistreatment of a serious illness to over prescribing pharmaceuticals, this book covers the issues that are keeping diabetes in our lives. Take back your personal power – take back your health.

The following review was contributed by: ROGER E. HERMANThere is no question today that governments—at all levels—are in dire fiscal straits. Years of political maneuvering, wasteful spending, mismanagement, and an economic roller-coaster have taken their toll. While wonderful innovation has been seen in a number of government agencies at the federal, state, and local level, most have a very long way to go. The resistance to change must be overcome if we are to avoid widespread bankruptcy of...
