Helen:

What made you write this book?

Dr. McCubbrey:

For more than 15 years, I struggled with weight problems ranging from anorexia to obesity. I finally discovered a “secret” that helped me win my battle with weight, and I wanted to share that secret with others.

Helen:

What do you exactly understand by "soul"?

Dr. McCubbrey:

When I use the word “soul,” I am talking about the core essence of who we are. It’s where we get our intuition, our guidance for our everyday lives.

Helen:

How can you measure the weight of your soul? Do you know how much your own soul weighs?

Dr. McCubbrey:

Right now, my soul is “light and free.” But it wasn’t always this way. My soul used to be heavily burdened by my obsession with weight, buried underneath diets and all the games dieters play. At that time, I was also very unhappy with many things in my life. You can get a sense of the weight of your soul by noticing if there is anything that is “weighing you down.” Maybe it’s diets, or bad relationships, or an unfulfilling career. This is the real “weight” you need to lose. And, when your soul becomes “light and free,” your body’s weight will follow.

Helen:

How did you develop the concept of "Intuitive Self-Care"? How does it solve the diet problem?

Dr. McCubbrey:

Intuition is the voice of the soul. It’s that “sixth sense” or “gut feeling”
that guides you in your everyday life. For example, let’s say you’re driving your car, and all of a sudden you get this sense that you need to turn right when you had planned on going straight ahead. Your intuitive voice says, “Turn, turn, turn!” And so you do, and then realize that by doing so, you avoided an accident up ahead. If our intuition helps us avoid negative situations and guides us towards positive outcomes, why not for weight issues, too? It’s our intuition telling us that diets don’t work. It’s our intuition telling us how to develop a positive relationship with food and fitness. It’s our intuition telling us how to solve our weight problems. “Intuitive Self-Care” is the process I developed to teach people how to reconnect with their intuition. I discovered this process during my own journey of overcoming my weight problem. It’s based on the habits of “naturally thin people”. They seem to be able to eat whatever they want, and maintain a slim shape because they are in tune with their intuition. Diets make us dumb, because they block our intuition. But naturally thin people have never lost touch. Intuition is their “secret.” Dieters just need to discover this “secret” too, by reconnecting with their intuition. That’s what the process of “Intuitive Self-Care” is all about.

Helen:

What is the most important thing we need to know about dieting?

Dr. McCubbrey:

Diets don’t work! If you want to GAIN weight, go on a diet. Once your diet is over and you go back to normal eating, you’ll regain any weight you may have lost. 95% of dieters end up weighing more than when they started their diet! That’s because metabolism slows down every time you restrict your food intake. Your body thinks it’s starving. Avoid this diet-induced obesity and practice Intuitive Self Care instead.

Helen:

Since when have you been treating clients with the non-diet diet approach and how many patients have you treated successfully?

Dr. McCubbrey:

I have worked for 10 years with clients struggling with weight problems ranging from anorexia to obesity. My clients report a 95% success rate, noting freedom from their food, weight and body worries.

Helen:

What kind of clients do you mainly see? More women than men, teenagers or middle aged women?

Dr. McCubbrey:

My clients have ranged in age from 10 to 70 years, both men and women, all races, and all socio-economic classes. I often say, “Weight problems don’t discriminate.” The majority of my clients are Caucasian women, from 25 to 45 years of age.

Helen:

Why does it help dieters to throw away their scales? What is the best way for them to measure their progress without scales?

Dr. McCubbrey:

We focus too much on how much our bodies weigh. As I ask in my book title, the real question is, “How much does your SOUL weigh?” Paying too much attention to the number on the bathroom scale can create a heavy, especially on our souls. No matter what you weigh, you can’t have a good day. If the number goes up, then you resolve to diet like never before, which will only lead to rebound weight gain. Even if the number goes down, it’s never low enough. If you ever reach your “goal weight,” then you’ll have to worry about maintaining that weight. To contrast, naturally thin people don’t weigh themselves and that’s what helps them stay free of weight obsession.
Instead of weight, which is external, pay attention to internal changes: reduced episodes of emotional eating, or increased desire for activity. The key is to focus on your real goals (happiness, health, balance, peace and confidence) and let your weight take care of itself.

Helen:

What response did you have from readers since the book was published?

Dr. McCubbrey:

Readers have said that this book has helped them end a lifetime of struggles with weight problems. They appreciate my openness with my own story, and can identify with the case studies I also include in the book. “It’s like a roadmap of freedom,” one woman said.

Helen:

Why are young girls especially at risk of developing an eating disorder?

Dr. McCubbrey:

In America, 2/3 of girls have already been on their first diet by their 10th birthday. Diets are a precursor for eating disorders. To prevent eating disorders, we need to prevent dieting. Girls need to realize that their worth cannot be measured using a bathroom scale.

Helen:

What can we generally do to prevent being part of the dieting game?

Dr. McCubbrey:

We are bombarded with messages about diets and other quick-fix regimens.Don’t buy it. (Literally. Don’t put money in the pockets of the multi-billion dollar diet industry.) Your weight problem developed slowly. Allow yourself to solve it slowly, healthfully, and intuitively.

Helen:

The real winners in the diet game are slimming magazines, fashion
designers, nutritionists, diet book authors, diet clubs and gyms and diet supplement companies. What (if) feedback did you have from people who represent the diet industry? Surely if your approach to dieting would be more widespread these people could eventually lose their multibillion dollar business.

Yes, right now the diet empire wins (money) every time we decide to lose (weight). My message may be perceived as a “threat” to the multi-billion dollar diet industry. But it doesn’t have to be that way. I have been invited to do several interviews with “diet” publications that were very supportive of my non-diet approach. I believe that magazines, gyms, supplements companies, etc. could embrace my message, and develop ads and products to support it. There doesn’t have to be a war against those empires. Instead, we can work together to end this war against our bodies and ourselves.

Helen:

Thank you Dr McCubbrey for your time.

What a relief! As she claims in the book, she spent one year immobile and still lost weight – the point is that if we’re truly in tune to eating only what our body needs, which is what this book is about, it will adjust our...
