Through The Squirrel, the Worm, and the Nut Tree, by Jimmie Powell, we are taken on an adorable adventure in this children’s book. Targeting the 2-4 year age bracket, Mr. Squirrel, after going out to gather nuts for his family for the winter, discovers that Mr. Worm has destroyed all of the nuts by making silk worm webs, therefore rotting the nuts. Together, with his family, Mr. Squirrel must devise a way to stop Mr. Worm.

I have two minor criticisms of the book. One, there is no real explanation as to why Mr. Worm did this, other than he was downright mean. Let’s face it, kids want to know why. And two, I would have liked to have seen a little more in the way of season changes. By spacing the book out over a period of a year, it gave a perfect opportunity to add a tidbit of learning about the season changes as well. 

After saying that, I find this book to be a sweet and charming tale. The illustrations, by Bobbi Switzer, are beautiful and engaging. The story itself is alluring and a great learning experience. Children can find out how to problem solve, work together, and the power of family. After reading this for review, I read it to my twins, and they were delighted. They were especially fond of the Ha Ha! sequences. Jimmie Powell certainly knows how to spin a good children’s story. I look forward to more of his books.
