Author: Sonia Seherr-Thoss

Publisher: Synergy Books

ISBN: 978-1-933538-73-0

Sonia Seherr-Thoss went to Columbia University to study economics as well as being an avid collector of historical artifacts. Sonia worked in farming during her career for over twenty years as well as being an early pioneer of cultural photography. She received many awards and praise. She is the author behind works such as Design and Color in Islamic Architecture, Human to Be and many more.

Sadly Sonia died in June 2006 at the age of 87 but her work lives on.

Many of the amazing photographs featured in this stunning book were taken from Sonia’s personal collection.  In this book we have over five centuries of the history of the world, each page with fascinating facts that will grab the reader if you have a thirst for this type of history. Sonia’s insight into these historic times, people and places all over the world is written in a very engaging way that is hugely enjoyable to all.

Every section of this engrossing read is filled with words that capture the true essence of all the corners of the world, with photography that illustrates just how splendid this wonderful book is.

England in the thirteenth century was relatively bleak, with many people without money or food. Did you know that it was our outlaw, Robin Hood, who tried to rid the people of starvation by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor? English poet Alfred Noyes made up an excellent poem about Hood himself which does conjure up what our favourite outlaw was all about. Some lines are:

Sherwood in the twilight, is Robin Hood awake?

Grey and ghostly shadows are gliding through the brake,

Shadows of the dappled deer, dreaming of the morn,

Dreaming of a shadowy man that winds a shadowy horn.

I find this particularly interesting as Robin Hood’s grave is situated on the Kirklees estate not far from where I live which I have often visited on occasions.

Also included in this section are many other facts and information about thirteenth century England - too many to mention so find out for yourself!

German-born Richard Wagner used the saga of Parsifal in his opera six centuries later. Another great fact to be found within this tome.

A great contributor to Catholic theology was St Thomas Aquinas born near Naples in 1225, his doctrines are used today for Roman Catholics.

This book tells the interesting story of the Crusades and also the history of the Mongols.

In the Fourteenth Century which this excellent book covers you will read how the Hundred Years war in England caused higher taxes, nothing new there! Geoffrey Chaucer was a court official as well as the poet we know him to be. There is everything you ever need to know about other counties too in this section.

Swiftly going through the next three centuries I ‘m sure you find  so much to interest you, you won’t be able to put the book down. It is amazing how ideas and events change the history of the world and how countries evolve and science, art and literature  are full of adventure.

A fabulous book to own.
