Shigeo Shingo was a leading contributor to the field of Industrial Engineering and was credited with some of the major developments in the field including The Toyota Production System and the Single Minute Die Exchange. In his book Kaizen and the Art of Creative Thinking (KACT), Mr. Shingo explores improvement in both production and services industries and provides a wide range of practical cases by which kaizen principles of analyzing industrial engineering processes can be applied in the manufacturing and services sector for increased effectiveness and productivity.
An important first step in continuous development is the "capturing of problems" - finding problems and defining them clearly. The author conveys through several cases the need for a relentless focus on the "why" to refine the problem, a quantitative approach and a global view of the problem definition beyond the obvious.
The next chapter lists a summary of techniques not just unique to kaizen but to idea generation and brainstorming in general. The use of deductive and inductive logic have been stressed to help generate new ideas and to identify different paths to reach the desired objective of higher efficiency. Generic steps in idea generation, brainstorming, and Gordon method for idea generation are detailed along with their application in the kaizen process.
Real-time implementation of ideas for improvement are covered in the next chapter. The author highlights that fact that overcoming mental obstacles is the key to successful implementation of kaizen principles. Separation of the idea generation process from judgement, different types of objections to improvement ideas and what to learn from them, ways to overcome these objections, and finding value in objections highlight the importance of managing the improvement process rather than just the ideas themselves.
The final chapter stresses the importance of Kaizen in organizations by including actively encouraging an attitude for change, tips to get by during change, and how to capitalize on the force of habit.
In summary, the book explains clearly the process of continuous improvement, emphasizes the key principles which are important in developing an improvements process from concept to implementation. This book will be highly useful for line managers in both manufacturing and service industries who are looking at analyzing their business processes for increased productivity and profitability.

Unger takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to stating the obvious; at least what is obvious to geniuses. He...
