Finally, a much-needed addition to travel literature has been published for travelers who wish to design their trips focusing on the world of flowers such as a violet festival in France or perhaps wildflowers in Namqualand, South Africa.

Based on her many years of researching flower books, guidebooks, tour itineraries, and related subjects on the Internet, Kate Savory, author of FLOWERtripping: A Traveler’s Guide to What’s Blooming When, provides travelers with a very insightful guide with extensive data concerning destination-specific botanical information.
Savory organizes her book into three sections: locations listed alphabetically where you can find flowers in bloom; times of the year beginning with the month of January where flowers will be blooming; the kinds and types of flowers and where they are in bloom.
As examples, if you look to the first table section dealing with locations, you notice that in Bariloche Argentina between November and December notro firbush can be found in sandy areas and open spaces. Moving to the second table section you will be informed that if you plan to travel in June you can go to Hvar Island Croatia where you will find lavender in the fields. And if you are not interested in traveling to Croatia, perhaps a trip to France will satisfy you, where you will find orchids growing in the wild in the Cevennes National Park. Suppose however you have favorite flowers in mind, such as alpine wildflowers, and you want to focus your itinerary on locating these in bloom, then proceed to the third table section where you will learn that these wildflowers can be found in such locations as Austria in late June to July, in the high country of Bhutan in August, in Bansko Bulgaria in late June, and in Vale Colorado from June to August.
In addition to providing locations, types of flowers in bloom and times of the year, Savory also includes some notes concerning the various venues. If you are interested in anemones, you can travel to Crete Greece during April and find these in rocky outcrops, where Savory adds in the notes that they are scented. If Begonias are you fancy, how about a trip to the Floral Carpet at Grand Place in Brussels, Belgium during the weekend of August 15th where Savory mentions there are 700,000 + flowers used.
Although in recent years there has been a spate of specialized guide-books that are long on such topics as culture and history, none deal with flowers and the possibility of arranging your travel around your favorites. Thanks to Savory’s gem of a little book, we now have a resource that effectively addresses this shortcoming. No doubt and as Savory hopes to achieve, FLOWERtripping: A Traveler’s Guide to What’s Blooming When will stimulate your travel dreams and add a new dimension to your next itinerary.
