Book 1 – The Many Faces of Friendship

Authored and compiled by Tonya L. Lambert

ISBN: 978-0-615-24079-4

Tonya L. Lambert, the author and anthologist for  Smartest Little Artist, has been writing since she won a prize in second grade in a Young Author’s contest. Over the past three years, her articles have been published in newspapers and magazines. The first book she penned was a young adult inspirational fiction book, Meant To Be and her most recent one is Smartest Little Artist

The Book features multiple stories, some poetry and some prose. In addition, she has included some remarkable digital photography as well as simple artwork to encourage young readers to be creative. After each tale, there are written questions to aid parents and teachers to more effectively communicate with their children.

Basically, the book is an anthology of collected prose and poems containing some of the following themes: A little leaf who is afraid of falling off his tree branch when autumn comes; Imaginary friends: Meet Bailey and her only friend Butterscotch who every one else thinks is imaginary, and find out what happens when a moving truck pulls up next door; Flowers coming alive in summer, can they be saved in the cold winter days? A brave little boy whose best friend is Fluffly, a stuffed animal. What will happen when Fluffy is not around ?

Keeping in mind that this book is an anthology, the stories should be read one at a time, so as not to puzzle children. I doubt if children’s attention could be held for the entire book in one reading. They would have to mull over each different storyline individually otherwise they will certainly become confused.

It would have been more beneficial, if each one of the stories were published one at a time, with more illustrations or artwork. The digital photographs are amazingly fun to experiment with if you have a special program on your own computer, such as Adobe Photoshop. Check out the cover picture of The Smartest Little Artist.  It is Photo-shopped and looks like a real painting.

One of the misgivings of this sweet book is that it is in need of some editing. Otherwise, it’s a good tool to engage children in the various activities described in it, such as expressing yourself in writing, photography or drawing.
