Author: Penny C. Sansevieri
ISBN: 1-60037-085-3 (Paperback): ISBN: 1-60037-084-5 (Hardcover)
From Book to Bestseller is a softbound book with 9 sections (or chapters). The book is also available in hardbound, eBook, and audio CD formats. The acknowledgments section is heartfelt and the disclaimer cautions the reader that additional marketing tools, beyond this single book, are recommended, and even offers a full refund for those choosing not to be bound by these terms. None-the-less, as the author of 5 books, none of which are bestsellers, I was looking forward to unlocking the secrets alluded to by the author…perhaps for my next book.
The first section might be described as a map for target audience identification. Much of this information is likely to be requested by a publisher preparing to promote your book, though the form may differ. A summarized narrative or checklist might have been helpful at the end of this section.
The second and third sections represent extensions of, still more, marketing advice. I found the advice provided at the bottom of page 81 particularly helpful – review copies sent between November 15 and December 27 might become holiday gifts and never get reviewed. I had not considered this seasonal pitfall.
Section four contained some information on QVC. I had considered attempting to market some of my own works on this shopping channel, so I read this component with great interest. I found it to be very helpful and informative, providing instructions and guidance, parsimoniously, along with the website address for their product submission page.
The sections that followed continued to maintain my interest…public relations mistakes to avoid, C-SPAN, and even getting on Oprah.
The early sections or chapters are necessary, but my level of interest escalated after I approached and passed the middle of the book, as many topics that I was surprised to see addressed were covered in sufficient detail to allow me to research these topics further.
I cannot say that this book will assure “bestseller” status, and appreciate the fact that the author included this same qualifier, going so far as to offer a full refund, in the disclaimer section. As the author of 5 (non-bestseller) books, I found the present book to contain valuable insights and I intend to apply some of the author’s recommendations in my own efforts to market my own work.
At $18.95 for the softbound version reviewed, I am recommending this book to both would-be and experienced authors. I suspect that even the most experienced author is likely to find value in its content.
