Sheila Lowe is herself a handwriting expert. She is a native of Great Britain but moved to the U.S where she spent much of her life. Lowe now lives in California with her three kids and elderly cat called Fritz. You can find out more about her by visiting her website.
This book features handwriting forensic, Claudia Rose. Many people should recognize her if you’ve read Lowe’s previous book, Poison Pen.
Here is she is assigned to work out if the signature of deceased Sorenson is his own. Before he died he changed his will and left much of his assets, including a girls school in California, to his wife.
Claudia must be able to determine if the signature is legit and in doing so, she strikes up quite a competition.
Claudia becomes increasingly embroiled into the private life of her client. Widow, Paige Soresnon, wants to know she can definitely have Claudia to rely on and if this signature is genuine. After all, aren’t some criminals masterminds at this sort of fraud?
Bert Falkenburg works as Paige’s assistant and claims he was witness to Sorenson signing the will but as always with cases like this, detectives can’t just take a word from a witness without anything to go on. Now the story really grabs your attention.
Claudia later stands in court and delivers her testimony in the witness box. However her sworn nemesis comes into the story here- herself a handwriting expert. And it seems beliefs are opposite…just what can happen next? Will the truth eventually come out?
Readers don’t have to be extremely clever to read this book and work out what is what but certainly some degree of intelligence is definitely needed as the plot gets a bit complicated in places.
It took me a while to work things out but if you are a fan of Lowe and detective programmes, such as Sherlock Holmes, this mystery read should entice you with its fast-flowing story laced with twists and a plot guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Murder, mystery and a dash of wit are the main ingredients here.
