Doug M. Cummings is the author of Dealer by the Lake that became a bestseller.
Cummings is an ex-cop who has worked the street on both sides of the crime scene tape and now uses his inside knowledge to create excellent crime-thrillers starring Reno McCarthy. Currently Cummings lives in suburban Chicago. More information can be found by logging onto his website.
The beginning of this novel starts off really thrilling. Older Brother has ventured into the eerie depths of the basement. His younger brother has been banished there with the cold concrete walls and spiders for company.
“Hey I’ve got a ham and cheese sandwich and some chips.” Older Brother calls into the gloom and is met with a grunt.
Why has their “Mama” ordered younger brother to stay in the basement and told Older Brother not to turn on the lights whilst he’s down there giving him some food?
Later a shooting followed by a dead body and a police investigation gets underway. They arrest a friend of Trey Hayden, the victim of the shooting, and questions are asked. Have they got the right person? Only time it seems will tell.
Reporters all want to write their own stories on events but Reno McCarthy isn’t buying the tale of jealousy over a girl. There is surely more to it then that?
Certainly this seems to be the case as body counts begin to rise and Reno is drawn deeper into the mystery and uncovers a community knee-deep in corruption and greed with startling links to secrets buried in the past.
Is a psychopath on the loose? Read this murder mystery to find out more.
Although I did enjoy many parts of this novel, there were a few places where I found I was a little bored. Hopefully though, the twists and turns should keep readers on their toes. You are always wondering who is who they say they are and who is the real murderer?
The unpredictable events, unique cast of characters and intriguing cover should appeal to many, making this Reno McCarthy novel a spectacular page-turner.
Let’s hope Cummings comes up with another book like this one again soon.
