Never Tell Me Never was an international best seller which received much praise. Having this book to review has been an absolute pleasure and Shepherd’s story is perhaps a lesson we can all learn in life.

Janine Shepherd never knew that one afternoon on a bike ride in the Blue Mountains  would turn out to be her last. She was tragically hit by a truck and doctors said it was feared she would die. Even if she did pull through, despite loosing such a large amount of blood, it was almost certain she would never be able to walk again.

Shepherd struggled to come to terms with these facts and being unable to even turn her head, she was bed ridden for twelve weeks. Even though she had a mirror over her head to help her see better, Shepherd’s sight was restricted considerably. Life confined to a hospital ward meant at times she became lonely even though her friends visited her and her parents remained by her side for most of the time.

Doctors would keep reminding Shepherd she would have to rely on a wheelchair for the rest of her life and any hope of regaining the use of her limbs was slight. However, Shepherd’s fighting spirit and optimistic attitude shocked everyone when she went on to not only walk again but within a year also hold her private pilot’s licence! Being able to control such a large machine and flying high up in the sky, gave her a feeling of freedom - something she hadn’t had much of while in the hospital.

During her time flying she was introduced to many friendly people  not to mention the ones she had met at the hospital.

Everyone she met was amazed by her tale of determination and bravery in the face of defeat and staggered that she also later on acquired her instructor’s permit.

This is a wonderful story, enhanced with photographs of Shepherd in different phases of her life, to be read if you enjoy reading about people who never give up despite what blows life can deal them. I loved every minute of this tale.

A lovely, touching tale of achievement and determination. It will warm every part of you.

If you have enjoyed it so much after you’ve finished, why not try Shepherd’s other novels Dare to Fly, Reaching For Stars and On My Own Two Feet. It is essential to read Never Tell Me Never first though and be warned while On My Own Two Feet is also a fantastic tale, it is sad too so prepare to get the Kleenex out!
