Spirit Matters is a memoir of Matthew J. Pallamary who tells his story of how he went in search of the truth amid the confusion of drugs.

Matthew is one of these guys who in time you will come to admire. His search revealed to him a core truth to life and what it means and why.

I started to read this and I couldn’t stop. The first line captured my attention with Matthew’s wonderful flow of words: “I am outside of time and space, where the normal rules of perception no longer apply”

This man is certainly clever, he does question the power of our souls and how our spirit carries us on throughout life and the universe. His journey is amazing and proves that no matter what we eventually must learn to trust our inner selves.

It seems strange at the same time that this man seems so in tune with things now because when he was young, he often found himself in the throes of drugs and alcohol. Mixing various substances together was quite a regular thing for Matt. The more he took, it seemed the more he bought. All this, thanks to his friends, who first suggested he should try marijuana and hashish to experience a high.

By the time Matthew started his senior year in high school, he was willing to up his drug taking to the next level and experiment with LSD. This caused Matthew to bunk off school missing much of his school year.

Matthew’s mother was there when he needed her most - she seemed to be almost that of a guardian angel and appeared before him when he really hit rock bottom. Still she did not save her son from the perils of drugs and in time Matthew became that of a drugs expert. He knew the effects all these drugs had and what would cause the best high and the worst. Yet somehow he came out the other side of this dark, illusion filled tunnel and later went to the heart of the Amazon and it is there he learnt, with the help of the shamans, to find the absolute truth.

I’m not sure this is a story to read if you are faint of heart as it is filled with tales of drugs, racism and violence as well as theft and even murder. I still enjoyed reading about Matthew’s spiritual quest and his wisdom. Definitely enjoyable but powerful stuff!
