I didn’t know you could actually rust as a human being. However, the opening chapter of this compelling work opened my eyes to see things differently. Moalem tells about a runner who has decided to train for “the Marathon des Sables – a 150-mile race across the Sahara Desert.” As he was training, he suddenly felt tired, his joints hurt, and his heart seemed to skip beats. He wasn’t sure he could make the event and went to see “doctors.” One after another, the physicians either could not find anything wrong with him “or they drew the wrong conclusions.” Blood tests revealed a “liver problem,” he was told he drank too much. Three years later, the real problem was discovered – “massive amounts of iron in his blood and liver.” He “was rusting to death.”
Pharmaceutical companies are already taking into account genetics – pharmacogenetics. What works for one group of people go not work well for another – as in the case of a usual hypertension treatment that works well except for African Americans. Genetics have a great deal with determining what does and does not work.
Diabetes, global changes, cryonics, the sun and what it means to our bodies, vitamins, melanin, the largest organ (the skin), food, Mother Nature’s evolution dance, natural herbs for painkillers and the likes, childbirth, and more are put out in front of in a way I have never seen before. It’s straightforward, logical, and truly connects the dots.
We need disease and you’ll learn why after reading Moalem’s captivating, well-researched accounting of how things really work. Find out why some Americans are immune to the HIV virus and more, too.
Once you pick this book up, don’t expect to put it down until you read the last words…”the more we learn about the unbelievably complex, immensely varied, and yet simultaneously simple origin and development of life on earth, the more it looks like a miracle, and one that is still unfolding. The miracle of evolution.”
