Julie Mars, author of Anybody Any Minute is also the author of The Secret Keepers and A Month of Sundays, a finalist for the Independent Press Memoir of the Year. She currently lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city.

For those of you who like thought-provoking novels with a dash of romance and humour, this is the book for you.

The story begins with middle-aged Ellen Kenny, who has just taken the plunge and bought herself a cheap and decrepit house while on the way to visit her sister.

Her husband, Tommy, is enraged with his wife’s decision to just randomly buy a house.

During their heated phone argument he yells at her that she must be mental - why on earth would someone just randomly decide to buy a house on impulse?

However, Ellen is not about to let Tommy and his controlling ways stop her from fulfilling her life’s dream, so she packs up and heads off to live in her new home for the summer. There, quite absurdly, she befriends an ex-biker, an aging chainsaw sculptor and a dog who does nothing all day but sleep.

This is the life she hadn’t prepared for and to make matters even more complicated her sister has just dumped her toddler on her hands.

I loved all the twists and turns this novel had to offer and I fell in love with Mutley, the sleepy dog. He was the character who stood out to me more than the rest with his sweet but lazy nature that most dog lovers will adore.

All in all this is a funny story with a very lovable heroine who tackles the issues of middle-age and what happens when the world as you know it suddenly changes.

Mars has a completely addictive way of writing that hooks the reader from the first page till the last. Her descriptions are keen and wonderfully acute and draw you in on a spiritual journey of self-discovery.

Mars writes with a fine skill like that of a painter. Her words flow effortlessly from the pages as she paints such lovely, picturesque scenes. It is not often you come across a book as delightful as this.

I think it would be an ideal novel to devour whilst on holiday in some hot exotic location or perhaps sitting in your deckchair in the garden on a warm summer’s day. Completely addictive reading with humour and likable characters throughout.
