Author: Tami Brady

ISBN: 978-1-932690-12-5

“Like many people, I came from a long line of women who became dependent upon a spouse or other loved one. Too many of my female kin have found themselves in dysfunctional relationships they felt that they couldn’t leave because of financial concerns. Reduced self-esteem and few options, unfortunately, kept the cycle going. Horribly, in most of these cases, the patterns were passed onto the following generation who continued to repeat the same mistakes.”

This book is about recognizing shortcomings in our lives and “regaining control” that’s always been there but was overlooked.

How important is independence? Brady quotes statistics that “only 1% of the world’s assets are in the name of women” and “many of us live in situations where a divorce, the loss of a job, or the death of our significant other would lead us directly into poverty.” Being dependent may lead to abusive situations. Brady explains, “Financial stress, inadequate coping skills to deal with increased care requirements, and increased dependency” and often reasons for abusive situations.

The author builds on four principles – freedom of expression, individuality, responsibility for self, and change. Her hope “is to help you to identify, define and work toward a life full of healthy interaction and personal contentment.” Brady claims,” The book will guide you step by step through the process of understanding the underlying causes of your dependency issues, and making solid changes to gain a healthier, happier life.”

This book starts off what real information – dependence vs. independence. Brady explains the difference where on one extreme end (dependence), the person is totally dependent on another for food, shelter, clothing, love, etc. – as a child would depend on the parents. The other extreme end (independence), the person appears to need no one for anything and thereby isolates themselves from the rest of the world. Self-reliance and self-esteem are also addressed with clear examples.

There are worksheets to physically see where you may be with regard to healthy control and a summary to use in your evaluation.  Now, you’re ready to move on, defining and setting your goals.

Brady makes self-examination easy in “Regaining Control.” The work pages are thoughtful and though provoking. Better yet, it’s an easy read for a daunting task. If you or someone you know is in a dependent relationship, “Regaining Control” may be the eye-opener they could use.
