Do you enjoy a decent walk safe in the knowledge when you reach the end, you can relax in a near-by pub with a good pint of beer or a glass of wine and perhaps a homemade meal from local produce? If so, this book should appeal.

Inside this edition are twenty circular routes, planned and guided by Ron Freethy, the author behind the many other walking guides including Teashop Walks in the Lake District and Drive and Stroll in West Yorkshire.

Here he takes us on numerous walks across the Lakes from Grasmere, home to William Wordsworth, and also to Far Sawrey where Beatrix Potter’s Hill home is open to the public. In fact, many of these walks are my favorites from hilly Keswick to the famous Grasmere with its lake featuring Alcock Tarn.

One walk that should be of interest to all generations is at Alston where it is possible during April and October to visit the Alston railway and catch a ride that travels over spectacular scenery with the river South Tyne seen at its best.

Readers are simply spoilt with abundant choice in this interesting collection of walks. The author has grouped the walks under different headings and regions.  Some walks take in historical facts as well as areas suitable for people who enjoy bird watching. While others, a winter excursion would best, when it is easier to spot them.

One of the walks takes you down a lovely valley with waterfalls and trees . There is Crummock Water and Buttermere to stroll around its shore and end up at the Fish Hotel. This is so called because the fish referred to is the char, an artic species related to the salmon and can often be found on the menu  alongside other local meats and desserts.

The ashes of  Lakeland writer Alfred Wainwright who died in 1991 are scattered on the mountains overlooking Buttermere and a memorial to him is to be found in the church . There are so many interesting facts to be discovered in this delightful walking guide.

Anyone who enjoys walking and especially if you love the Lake District must make this book their own.  It is also delightful if you are an armschair walker sitting in the comfort of your own home in front of a roaring fire. However, trust me, it is more plesureaable to get out there with this wonderful guide.
