Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography

Author: Stephen Trimble

ISBN: 0-87358-894-0

Publisher: Northland Publishing

Stephen Trimble grew up roaming the west with his geologist father and his love for the land and especially the Grand Canyon comes across in beautiful living color in Lasting Light: 125 Years of Grand Canyon Photography. This photo compilation covers 125 years of spectacular photos of the Grand Canyon. The story behind each photo is as lovely as the photograph.

The book begins with the first photographs of the Grand Canyon. They were taken by Timothy O’Sullivan in 1871. He was part of an Army geographical survey looking for a supply route. Their brown and gray shadows are a reminder of a photographic era that passed before most of us were born—you can’t help but touch the pages, hoping somehow to touch the past. The first few pages are a thought-provoking journey.

Eventually the pictures and stories evolve into the art medium that photography is today. Some of the pictures are naturally beautiful—the subject is the art. Others become the art themselves. They are all inspiring. With each turn of the page, I am struck by something new, but equally as beautiful as what I’ve already seen. Inside my head I keep hearing, “Oh, this is my favorite…” at least until I turn the page again.

You might be tempted to flip through the pages to see each new picture—ignoring their accompanying stories. That’s Okay, but do take the time to return to the beginning and read about the photographers who produced those breath-taking shots. Lasting Light isn’t just a coffee-table book; it’s a history of individual experiences in the Grand Canyon told through photographs and words.
