I was not honestly sure what I thought when I started to read this novel by film director Graham Bendel. It starts off with Jonathan Urich who spends his time in the world of publishing. He has met Sime Hunst, a modern artist with a unique character.

I’m afraid I would dislike Hunst very much - his artistic eye has given him his trademark “violence beneath everything” and he likes to portray chopped-up animals and dead butterflies in his “work”.

If I met this kind of character in real life I’d have to run a mile but here I am reading about such a vile man!

The story goes on to tell of how Jonathan gets embroiled into reading Hunst’s new novel he’s written. He tells Jonathan it’s about “BAD THINGS”.

Jonathan isn’t sure what to think but certainly notices twenty seven year old office assistant Cynthia who likes men (of course!) and dislikes drugs. Basically Jonathan starts to think rather sexual thoughts that I found completely off-putting and we learn that oval faced Cynthia with her good advice has great acting skills and the morals of an alley cat. These combined with her skills at seducing make her games with men easy to play and they become putty in her hands.

Cynthia is not the most pleasant of characters to come across but I suppose it adds to the atmosphere of the story and is done very well.

However is she the only one who is up-to something? Urich has a cunning plan too and is sure he can get her into bed with a bribe.

What does a contract signed in blood and money have to do with a certain piece of work? Read this unique story to find out more.

Hunst struck me as a very antisocial type of man and I felt he wasn’t letting on as much as he knew. What is his work all about and why does he behave like he does?

Urich is onto something but when he starts to play games….who can you trust?

The front cover is very well portrayed as to what the story is about. It is entitled “Death In The Womb” and I think it works wonderfully even though it is a little grotesque.

I haven’t read a book like this one in a while and parts of it were confusing but I have no doubt there are fans out there who thrive on reading novels like this and will find it an absolute page-turner about art, sex and most of all violence. Intriguing!
