Corey Lynn Fayman has covered all sorts of professions from a musician, part time private eye and educational technologist to a mult-media developer. He has outlived the rock and roll bands and has now found himself teaching interactive design and multimedia.

It is from these roots that Corey has brought together his first mystery book Black’s Beach Shuffle. This name originally was “The Dead Geek” but after editing it and thinking about the characters and locations Corey decided on Black’s Beach Shuffle as a much more suitable title. Black’s Beach is San Diego’s popular clothing optional playground. Corey currently lives in San Diego with his wife.

The tale begins as aging rock and roll detective Rolly Waters returns to pick up his treasured 1965 Gibson ES-335 electric guitar from a friend’s mansion.   He and his band had been playing that night for a fast-rising internet company, EyeBitz.com however before long Rolly feels the hairs on the back of his neck stand to attention. Floating in the swimming pool is a naked body.

Grabbing his guitar, Rolly makes a speedy retreat.

However a few days later it becomes apparent that chief technology officer, Curtis Vox, has gone missing. Nobody can get hold of him and events begin to take a sinister turn. Also what is it with the missing Magic Key that turns out to be a USB mini-disk.?

As detective Rolly is driven deeper into a shadowy plot, filled with murder, mystery and a dash of humour, the reader can only wait in anticipation as this book draws to a close.

Corey has taken a very different approach to this genre too by not inventing an ordinary every day type of detective but someone who has a colourful personality with a rock and roll background.

This is a book that has the very spirit of Southern California interwoven throughout the lives of these realistic characters. From the high cliffs over looking Black’s Beach to the front cover, everything about this read should appeal. It’s a book that can easily be read in an afternoon as every chapter is fast paced and  easy reading.

This mini-novel will appeal to mystery fans in everyway. The modern twist keeps you on your toes and to say this is Corey’s first attempt at this genre, I think he has really pulled it off.

This is the very first introduction to Rolly and I think we shall be seeing more of this detective when hopefully Corey decides to do a follow-up.
