John Leake, born in Dallas, Texas, studied philosophy at Boston University and earned himself an M.A. After he won a fellowship at the Institute for Human Sciences, John lived in Vienna for around 6 years where he and worked as a translator and editor. Entering Hades is John’s first book.

When you look at the back cover of this thrilling book and see Jack Unterweger dressed in an expensive white suit wearing sunglasses, it is easy to forget that this is the serial killer who was found guilty of murdering nine prostitutes…and that is not accounting for the others he supposedly killed. But looks can be deceiving say many of the women in this true-crime tale of a man whose hatred for women put him in jail and later led him to suicide.

Where did this hatred come from? John with the help of others, attempts to find out and reveals the double life of one of Austria’s most dangerous men.

Under the faint glow from the watchful moon, hookers stalked the streets at night looking for their latest thrills and offers. It just so happened that on one of these nights Jack, after being released from prison for the murder of 18-year-old German Margaret Schäfer, was also there and used the opportunity to select another victim.  Often, when Jack was in the Vienna area, he would take his victims to the woodland and finish off the murders being careful enough to leave the bodies only partly covered with leaves and foliage.

Many more of these killings were to happen but the police simply could not make a connection when the murders started to occur in different continents. They did not think that they were in any way linked, despite the fact that these women were all killed in a similar method - by strangulation with their own bras. The search began for the killer, but on many occasions the hunt proved unfruitful.

Police believed they were not searching for Jack but a man they called the Vienna Woods Killer…until they considered a tip-off.

Jack meanwhile, was enjoying the high-life cruising around Vienna and indulging in his latest pastime - dining at various café’s. He was also doing  photo shoots for magazines and winning the attention of more females - just what he wanted.

This is the story of Jack’s life told to us in an entertaining yet chilling tale as John uncovers excerpts from Jack’s dairies written at the time and leads us on a roller-coaster-ride of morbid discovery.

John has managed to conjure up Jack’s character so well that it was almost like Jack is there within the folds of this novel showing you the true intensity of his crimes.

A book that kept me hooked throughout and did not leave my mind until long after I turned the last page. A thrilling yet alarming read.

For lay people or amateur scholars, it is a load to read. It is also in a strange 8 ½ by 11 layout, more like a children’s coloring book. Not a proper format for what is really a textbook.
