"Despite Centers for Disease Control estimates that only 20,000 new Lyme disease infections occur each year, the true figure, as Harvard medical school researchers have found, more approaches 200,000," writes Stephen Buhner. And, as a Lyme disease victim and advocate, I can attest to the validity of this statement.

Lyme disease symptoms range from "mild lethargy to severe arthritis to incapacitating mental dysfunction." And, the "tests for the disease are not very reliable and antibiotics are only partially effective; up to 35% of those infected will not respond to treatment or will relapse." So, where do victims turn? Stephen Buhner's "Healing Lyme" is a good place to start.

Lyme disease is caused "by a particular kind of bacterium -- a spirochete," much like syphilis. "At this point in time, antibiotics are the clearest choice for killing spirochetes, with some caveats. Many people think of herbal approaches to treating Lyme borreliosis as "experimental“." Mr. Buhner goes on to say, "With Lyme infection, everything is experimental." It's not surprising that Stephen Buhner would find himself in "a war zone."

The "zone of conflict" is not between "human beings and Lyme disease organisms, but a battle between people holding competing theories of Lyme disease and its treatment." It has been proven that "long-term" antibiotic protocol treats many diseases well. Then why is this not readily considered for the treatment of Lyme disease? "Caught in the crossfire are those with Lyme disease who are trying to understand what is happening to them and to discover how best to deal with it. This is, in my opinion, reprehensible," the author writes.

Stephen Buhner points out that there are "six points" that stand out "after a rather long and intense examination of the existing material: (1) There is a lot of hysteria about Lyme disease. Everybody is pretty scared, most are not really sure what to do, including physicians; (2) There are a lot more sick people than the statistics indicate; (3) Antibiotics are not nearly s effective as purported to be; (4) Clear, concise, unemotional information is hard to obtain; (5) Tests for Lyme disease are not very reliable; (6) Something very strange is going on in the field of Lyme disease and its treatment." These are powerful points and ones that have concerned most Lyme disease victims, their families, some healthcare professionals, but few government agencies. “Healing Lyme” shines the light on natural healing protocols -- herbs.

The natural treatments are easy to follow, herbs are readily available, and it all appears safe to use when directions are followed. The part of the plant used, the plant’s background, what symptoms it treats, and dosage is included. It’s alternative protocols that have been used for thousands of years. If they didn’t work, I believe they would have faded out long ago. Then why are we running to synthetic protocols -- that sometimes work?

"Healing Lyme" covers what Lyme disease is, considerations for natural treatment, and herbal treatment of coinfections. It also covers the prevention of Lyme disease and "initial treatment after tick bite." The resource and reference sections are as valuable as the book, itself.

When the antibiotics don’t work, this may be your answer. If you don’t want to put another pharmaceutical product in your already compromised immune system, this may be your avenue to health. When your insurance company refuses to pay for man-made pills, you have a safety net inside the pages of “Healing Lyme.“ Whatever the reason, this is a “must-have” book for Lyme disease victims, family members and healthcare professionals.
