A former dancer and her gifted young son are guided and helped by intelligent beings of light in this work of visionary fiction by Lynn Voedisch.  With themes of Zen and Taoism, Excited Light uses knowledge of science and physics to back up the ideas of evolution of the spirit, and the existence of benevolent spirits. It is vaguely reminiscent of “The Celestine Prophesy,” but with a stronger plot and more alluring characters.

Allegra is caught in an alcohol addiction that her ten-year-old son observes with foreboding. Alex has a gift for communication with higher entities—something like angels—and they sooth his fears via messages channeled through his plush toy duck.  Jack, a doctoral student in physics, takes the boy under his wing, and joins with Allegra’s friend, Julie, in trying to help Allegra; which is especially hard when Allegra enters into a destructive relationship with a seductive co-worker, Raf.

Voedisch is adept at writing desirable male lead characters.  Both the doctoral student and Raf are captivating.  All of her main characters are well developed and written sympathetically.  I thought that Allegra was written a little too sympathetically.  She has a drinking problem that everyone worries about but we never see her do anything really bad.  Sometimes she cried or—(gasp)—stumbled around in front of Alex.  We are told he is wise and mature, but when he is left alone, he can’t even seem to make himself a sandwich.  In many real-life instances, a child like him would be cooking, cleaning, dressing his mom for work and even driving her there.  (Maybe not driving, but you get my point).

Nevertheless, the prose shines during Jack’s thought-provoking discussions with Alex, and at many other parts as well.  Overall, this is a light, happy read, and a compelling look at how everyone’s lives touch so many others, with poetic passages here and there about shimmering light photons.
