Author: Debbie Ford

Publisher: HarperOne

ISBN: 978-0-06-089737-6

We read stories in the media of how good people have gone wrong. We seem to thrive on reading these sad tales and yet self-destruction takes place much nearer to home on a daily basis. In our family, ourselves and friends - we don’t understand why.

Debbie Ford in this compelling, powerful read explains and helps to unlock these patterns of sabotage.

The beginning of the book tells us that we have two sides; if we suppress the dark side it will be like a volcano and will explode when we least expect it to happen. We must acknowledge our suppressed emotions; she calls it the Beach Ball Effect. If our ego gets wounded, our sub-conscious mind has the power to ruin our lives.

All this is strong stuff but read on.

Good people do bad things when we shun our human urges. Apparently many of us will display behaviour that we never imagined ourselves capable of. This can pop up at any time and Debbie tells us we have to deal with the pain of our past and learn from it. She tells us of the way we all wear a mask to cover our true type.

Shame causes many problems and she says that we are all running away from the devastating feelings of shame, humiliation and embarrassment. In fact we go to great lengths to avoid that horrible raw feeling. We unwittingly grow up hearing voices telling us “you are bad”, sometimes loud sometimes soft. This instils fear into us and gives us shame-filled messages so we begin to think that we are bad and nobody will like us.

Hurt - unexpressed, unhealed, is a toxic emotion and is at the heart of why good people do bad things. The author gives us a list of six toxic emotions egg: hate is ruled by fear and is behind war, religions, crime, bigotry and vandalism among others. She writes about them in depth.

Balance in everything seems to be the answer, if you read this excellent book you’ll discover the strength of forgiveness and that ultimately love is the answer to everything. I’m sure you’ll agree too that if you forgive it gives you strength to move on after hurt.

This book in many ways is quite different from most of the self-help ones that I have read. Most just keep repeating the same mantras over and over but Debbie looks at things from a different perceptive.

It is a very compassionate book and explores our emotions and reasons for doing bad things in great depth, written in an easy to understand way. She doesn’t flinch in explaining in a constructive way that we can turn our lives around.

Obsessive and compulsive reading.
