Though there are no real surprises for the self-aware, this book is a useful tool for those wishing to improve and analyse their relationships in a constructive way, and it does remind us of what works best for harmonious couplings.
The book consists of a number of chapters looking at different aspects of the relationship, such as ‘Understanding and Respecting your Relationship’, ‘Your Relationship Vision’ and ‘Emotional Awareness’. It requires a couple to work together, and there are exercises to help the reader(s) make the mental transition from what the book is saying, to applying it into their own lives and relationship.
Some of Myron Lewis’ points were enlightening, and gave food for thought. Particularly, Lewis points out that it is not enough to just want to be in the relationship, but that we must also envisage the essence and direction of the relationship to keep it on track. Doing this defines the emotional connection we feel, thereby allowing us to maintain that throughout.
What this book was lacking was a bit of pizzazz; some humour and spark to keep it readable and interesting with each new page. It was hard going, not because the language was too technical or jargoned (in that respect it was very understandable and accessible) but it just wasn’t exciting enough to keep up concentration without effort. With non-fiction and topics such as this, difficult as it may be, the reader’s interest needs to be maintained in imaginative ways.
I feel that Lewis makes some very good observations, providing a useful reference and guide for couples who want their love to last. It might require a bit of dedication to last through the book before falling asleep, but you will hopefully learn a few new tricks to enable your relationship to seep the kind of smug love and happiness that is normally reserved for those who write books about relationships!
